About Winston

Jack Russell
Age: Senior
Sex: Male

I got Winston about six months ago. I can no longer care for him. My patience has run its course with this little fellow. You would think by now he would have come to understand my house rules. He is an older dog and likes to do his own thing. He only listens when he feels like it or when I get to the point of going after him; to make him do what I have instructed him to do. The kennel is normally used for punishment. The kennel is now his permanent dwelling place at all times. I can't trust him. He likes to lay on my furniture. I have bought for him a cot, sever beds, and rugs for each room. Both dogs have their own to lay on in each room. My furniture and rugs are off limits. That sets my anxiety off really quick when I catch him on it. My current dog (Samson) listens and follows instructions very well. I have had Samson for 5 years. When I start yelling at Winston. Samson thinks that I am yelling at him and he gets nervous as if I am scolding him. Samson doesn't know how to overlook my yelling when it's directed to Winston. He gets nervous and starts to keep his distance because he thinks that I am mad at him. Samson is my registered emotional support animal. Now, it seems that Samson needs emotional support due to me yelling all of the time at Winston. I am a disabled veteran who suffers from PTSD. Love animals they calm me. This is not happening with Winston. I got Winston six months ago. He was in need of a home. I thought it would be a good idea to get another dog so that my current dog (Samson) would have a companion. Winston came from a family in Akron, OH. They had Winston every since he was a puppy. His birthday is September 8, 2011. He was their family dog. The owner's parents and sister lived in the home with Winston. They had to rehome Winston because the owner has a one-year child. Winston bit him when the child put his hand in Winston's food bowl. When she took her son to the hospital. She was told that she needs to get rid of Winston otherwise they were going to get children services involved. Winston's owner was devastated and was torn about getting rid of him. She didn't want to see Winston caged up all the time especially when he is used to moving around her house freely. Now, I'm in the same predicament. I want Winston to go to a good home. I'm afraid that I may hurt him. That is why I am trying to get rid of him as soon as possible. That's how bad my anxiety is flaring up. I'm tired of yelling at him. I have contacted 6 places. Registered him on two websites. I tried to drop him off at the local humane society. The wait is a month out. Today, I came close to taking him to a neighborhood and drop him off. My conscience won't let me. If I get to the point where I will hurt him. Then I will drop him off in a neighborhood somewhere. What I have learned about Winston: Winston is a sweet dog. He loves to lay near you at all times. He follows you all around the house. He loves to ride in the car. He likes to go for a walk. He gets really excited when you pick up his leash. He will bark and run to the door when he has to go out to the potty. He is food-driven. Always looking for a treat. He will bark at you and run to the pantry where the treats are kept. He doesn't like to be alone. He acts out by flipping his bed, dragging it across the room, and taking the stuffing out of it. Sometimes he acts out when he doesn't get a treat. He doesn't like to be held. It's seeming like he has been handled roughly because he has to be picked up a certain way. I will kneel down slowly to pet him first. When he is facing me or stands on his hind legs then he is ready to be handled. If you don't take the time to prepare him first, he will yelp as if he is being hurt and he will nip at you. When going for a car ride. He will jump up to get in the car. He will wait for you to pick him up to take him out of the car. {no signs of aggression during this time)
