About Maki

Bengal
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Maki is a charming, active, and EXTREMELY handsome 6-year-old purebred Bengal boy. His owner purchased him as a kitten in December of 2015, with all the hopes of a great and long-lasting companionship. Maki has been that and more. Maki lives with a gentle boarder-collie dog who he gets along quite well with. He's also been exposed to other dogs that were being fostered, and he didn't seem to mind them so long as they were cat-friendly. Maki hasn't been around other cats, but he has been around children who were well-trained about proper cat handling techniques. Despite being a really winsome and fantastic Bengal, sometimes living circumstances can change through no fault of the cat's or the human. Maki's owner is working much longer hours than she anticipated, and has had to start traveling as well. Maki is not pleased with the long hours that he spends on his own, and when his owner travels - he has to stay with family. This has been very disruptive for Maki - he craves stability and consistency (like all Bengals do, to be honest). Recently Maki began to avoid using the litter box. This usually occurs during the time his owner is traveling or right after his owner has traveled. His owner sought out medical evaluation, and she is practicing best litter box maintenance, but these incidents continue to occur (approximately every 3 weeks or so). He was checked for UTI / crystals / stones and he tested negative. It is possible that Maki could have a condition commonly referred to as FLUTD - this is easily resolved. For more information about FLUTD please read our article on the topic. https://bengalrescue.org/resources/litter-box-issues/ We have seen many cases like this, here at Bengal Rescue. Often times when cats are demonstrating litter box avoidance, if UTI / Crystals / Stones and FLUTD are ruled out (which it has been in Maki's case), it is usually an environmental issue. These are sensitive cats who crave ROUTINE and attention. When they do not receive this constancy, this is when litter box issues can crop up. Ok so enough about the flare-ups due to travel and need for more attention. Let us tell you more about Maki! Maki is the life of the party! He always greets new people in the home like he's always known them. He does not have a shy bone in his body. Maki is SO playful! He loves his catnip toys, he goes crazy playing in his cat tunnel, he loves his cat tower and his scratching post / tower. He loves to lounge in the sun, and to climb onto the kitchen counter to see what his humans are doing (if that freaks you out, please don't apply unless you're willing to follow our humane guidelines for retraining him not to do that). NEWS ALERT. This is a cat who was trained at a young age to have his nails clipped! He's also harness / leash trained, and loves to give 'high-fives' (one of the building block steps in clicker-training). We are proponents of Raw-feeding for Bengals, and thankfully his owner is also aware of the benefits. Maki eats Primal chicken / salmon raw and his sparkling coat and great digestive system is a testament to the benefits of raw-feeding. Maki loves to nap in his human's lap. He loves to be wherever his people are. He has a sunny good nature, he is kind, affectionate and loving. He definitely will speak up when he's hungry! He's not 'over the top' loud but he's definitely a great communicator. Maki is neutered, received all of his vaccinations as a kitten (we're in agreement with that), and he is strictly indoors. If you think you have the right family to give Maki the attention and love he would love and appreciate, please fill out our Adoption application: https://bengalrescue.org/adopt/adoption-application/
