About JAKE

American Staffordshire Terrier / Lab
Age: Senior
Sex: Male

*RESCUE-ONLY* The original intake photo of JAKE (#A1992300) is pathetic, and certainly doesn't depict how cute he really is. But his cuteness won't get him out of the East Valley Animal Shelter, Van Nuys, CA, unless a rescue pulls him. He was surrendered on July 31. JAKE was a 'gift' to the ex-owner. Offhand, I don't know how long ago this 10-year-old was 'gifted,' but, supposedly, Jake has had a couple of bite incidents over several months. I have stopped at his kennel on a few occasions, and each time his tail is wagging and he seems happy to get my attention. He sits for treats and he is a cutie. The following are notes logged by staff and volunteers about their interactions with JAKE: 'MAILBOX (Sat, Sep 25, 2021 2:45 PM) BEHAVIORAL Per Volunteer Date of Interaction: 9/25/2021 Animals: JAKE (#A1992300) Jake was waiting at the front of his kennel. I fed him a few pieces of cheese through the door, and he had a loose stance and waggy tail, so I entered the kennel and leashed him. He was easy to walk-- a little wiggly, but no pulling. When we sat on the bench to wait for Togo to leave, Jake would sit readily for treats and even jumped up on the bench next to me and sniffed my hair. In the yard, he impressed the crap out of me with his tricks-- sit, stay, paw, down, roll over. He also jumped up for treats. Very active for a 10 year old. He was very physically affectionate with me. Easy to releash and return. MAILBOX (Tue, Sep 7, 2021 2:59 PM) ENGAGEMENT TRAINING Per Volunteer Date of Interaction: 9/7/2021 Animals: JAKE (#A1992300) 10 YEARS OLD 48 POUNDS When I approached Jake's kennel he came out from his cubby. I gave him a couple treats through the door and then walked in. He retreated into his cubby but was lured out with treats. I told him to sit and to stay and easily looped him. He walked around the yard. In the yard he immediately explored so I just took a seat. He came up to me and solicited some attention many times. I asked him to sit he did and he also gave me paw when asked. I played some fetch with him and he engaged in some play with me. He would chase the ball but not sure what to do with it. Volunteer brought a shepherd into the adjacent yard and Jake was excited to see him and greeted him nicely. Followed the shepherd along the fence tail wagging and interested. Walked well through the kennels and was easily returned MAILBOX (Sat, Sep 4, 2021 5:28 AM) ENGAGEMENT TRAINING Per Volunteer Date of Interaction: 9/3/2021 Animals: JAKE (#A1992300) On approach Jake was standing in the back of his kennel I threw him a treat and he moved forward and ate it . I cracked open the door and he ran in his cubby. I lured him out with treats and closed the cubby door and looped him slowly and carefully he was fearful leaving the kennel and walking to the yard. I left the leash on thinking he would avoid me . He wandered around for a while and then came right up to me soliciting affection and rolling over for a belly rub. He knows sit and takes treats gently. I put him back with no problem MAILBOX (Sun, Aug 22, 2021 2:40 PM) BEHAVIORAL Per Volunteer Date of Interaction: 8/22/2021 Animals: JAKE (#A1992300) Spent a few minutes outside of Jake's kennel. Fearful, mid to high FAS. However, this dog knows sit and down. He did snap and bark when I placed my hand flat on the front of the kennel but immediately stopped when I said no. Will sit or lay down for treats. BEHAVIORAL (Tue, Aug 17, 2021 11:56 AM) was in the cubby, did approach and low growl retreated. Able to toss a leash on and move to main kennels without incident BEHAVIORAL (Sat, Jul 31, 2021 12:00 PM) 07/31/21 Source that brought the dog in stated that his Girlfrind (Victim) was sitting on the couch and the dog bit the cheek unprovoked Source as well stated that this dog has bitten in the past: 1st Time: several months ago source was hanging out with his friends and one of his friends bent down to pet the dog and the dog bit. 2nd Time: July 4th A friend bent down to pet the dog and the dog bit the hand' There's often two sides to a story but, unfortunately, JAKE can't tell his side. Hopefully, a rescue will read all the positive notes and go to the shelter to meet JAKE. Maybe the rescue will agree with those of us who know him that he needs a chance to live the rest of his life outside the shelter.
