Australian Cattle Dog / German Shepherd

Dodge is an amazing dog! Deemed a stray and stuck in SBD City shelter, a high volume high kill facility, he was there for over 3 months! Unheard of... Why did they keep him alive?! I know why. Because he is a damn good dog, that's why! Approx 2 yrs, 48lbs, cattle dog / shepherd mix, it's obvious what a gorgeous boy he is. But in the shelter, behind bars, he had to be on his game, and the staff incorrectly believed him to be aggressive with other dogs. Stop right there. Fake news. I found out the truth within 10 minutes of arrival to this rescue. With no cages or barriers, he came face to face with a curious, balanced, but exhuberant new pack. It was a beautiful thing. Dodge hs never initiated anything but play here. My dogs totally relaxed after a few minutes with him. I can safely say, Dodge has no issues with people. He's met lots of people and he's been nothing but respectful, warm and friendly. I trust his face in my face. Dodge was introduced to life in a calm rescue, he's thriving. Not just thriving, he's gained a new confidence that comes with the trust I give him. We began pack walks pretty quick, him on leash of course, and for his first three outings. I played with recall and had him bouncing between my volunteer Vicky and me, on the side of a mountain, while each of us called him alternately, he ran back and forth between us, the distance growing. His 4th pack hike, he was off leash and burning off energy across a mountain. If I couldn't see him, I could hear him crashing through the brush with Netty. What a satisfying feeling! I have to assume Dodge felt the same. There is nothing like trusting a dog, only to have them disappear, while I wildly blast my coaches whistle, when he crashes through the trees into my arms! For real, right into my open arms, burying his head in my chest. All I could say was 'Thank you'. He also said 'Thank you'. Through the efforts of many, Dodge was yanked from the shelter with the efforts of many. Right into a clinic, fixed, vaxed and flown (care of Pilots N Paws) to Paso Robles. Dodge was completely accepting of this episode. I met him on a tarmac, with his shelter mate Natalia, and both were happy to get in the vehicle with the wheels staying on the ground! Both dogs are great in the van, hopping in and out with a few words or hand gestures. He's learned what it is to be in a pack, not separated by bars, not bombarded with noise! Dodge knows how to use my dog door, he knew right away. But after only a few verbal corrections, he knew he's not allowed in unless invited. Makes it easy and I can leave my gate open for the house dogs to have all access. Dodge stays in his big yard. I'm very proud to say what a good dog this guy is! My heart is still warm from seeing him come running to me when he has the whole world he could be running. It's like this with every dog at first. Some are less predictable than others. And because he's not a full heeler, I never know how his breed mix will impact his thinking. Heelers stay with you! The shepherd in him could make things tougher, but apparently not! I will get photos now he is off leash. But while working toward that goal, I can't have a huge camera around my neck. Future photos will tell his story. He's a wonderful dog! We've got a few videos of him on this page. And more are always in the works. For questions or an application: [email protected]
