About Hallie

Adoption Fee: $100
Australian Cattle Dog / Border Collie
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Hallie is a great dog. I got her as a puppy when I lived in Coeur D Alene ID. I had a stable life as I worked from home and had a live in girlfriend so Hallie was always with me and was happy. In January of 2021 my girlfriend and I separated and I moved to Bremerton WA to start a new job. I have been working long hours, and my job involves travel several times a year for a few weeks. My lifestyle does not support my dog in the way she needs. She is not getting the amount of time she needs to be happy. She needs to be around her owner(s) most of the time, and hates being stuck at home all day. It breaks my heart to do this but I am not giving the dog what she needs to be happy and I am looking to find someone who can. Hallie's ideal owner(s) will be experienced dog owners and understand the breed. Hallie needs a strong leader to feel secure and she will be extremely attentive and obedient. She is an incredibly smart and well behaved dog. She has never chewed/destroyed anything while left alone at home and is fully housebroken. She needs an owner that has the ability to spend time with her and will not leave her at home all day while they are at work. Ideally she would live in a place with some space. No apartments or condos. Hallie is a heeler, so she is mistrustful of strangers until she has seen them several times. I can walk her in parks and crowds and she will be alright. If a stranger quickly approaches her to pet her she will jump back and growl at them. When I have strangers come to the house I instruct them they need to ignore the dog and she will be find. If they call her and try to pet her she will get defensive and growl. If they ignore her then on the 3rd or so visit she will be very receptive towards them and accept pets and attention. 99% of the time she is pretty receptive towards women, but she is mistrustful of men (I am her owner and I am a male for reference). She needs to be around people that understand dogs. When I am walking her in the park and little kids run up to her I step between them and my dog. They will ask to pet her and I tell them she is afraid of strangers. She hasn't spent a lot of time around kids and I worry because her herding instinct is strong and she might nip their heels. There have been two times where Hallie has nipped heels and this was due to my loosing control of her. One time was when I was helping a friend move out of his house. Hallie was off leash and running around. I was helping him to carry a mattress to his truck and we were struggling to throw it up on top of the bed. Our struggling triggered her herding instinct and I didn't notice her circling my friend because I was struggling to lift the mattress. She nipped his calf and it was minor but it did break skin. Another time she was at my parents house and was hanging out off leash in the front yard. There are these big hedges on either side of the house so you can't see down the sidewalk in either direction. A guy was running that she didn't see as he appeared suddenly from the hedge right behind her running down the sidewalk. She was startled and turned and nipped at his heel but didn't draw blood. Fortunately he was not upset about it and didn't make it a big deal. That's why I am looking for a experienced heeler owner. This dog has very strong instincts and if they are triggered she will react. I would always take her hiking in the woods in Coeur D Alene as they were right next to where I used to live. She would always be left off leash. She never strayed far and would always come back when called. Even if we came across deer she would chase them off then run right back. She really is a great dog and it is a very tough decision for me to re-home her but I just don't have the time to give her that she needs. She is at home all day while I am at work for 10 hrs a day and she is not happy. I am in no rush to re-home her and she is not going to a shelter or a kennel. I am taking the time to find the right owners and then have her go straight to her new home. I am confident that she will re-adjust to the new owners just fine, because one time I had to travel for 4 weeks and dropped her off at my parents house so they could watch her. It was only the second time she had ever met them and she had never been to their house before. My dad said she was sad for a few days then re-attached to him as her new owner and was very happy because he was retired and could spend most of the day with her taking her on walks and to the dog park to run. She loves going to the dog park to chase balls and frisbees and doesn't mind other dogs. I am rambling now but I think this is a pretty good description of the dog. If you feel like you are the right owners please contact me and we can talk on the phone so I can describe this dog more. I am going to make sure se goes to the right home and owners, and I am not in any rush to re-home her what's most important for me is finding the right home.
