About Bernie

Adoption Fee: $0
Saint Bernard
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Bernie is a handsome, good boy!! But he doesn't know it because he is deaf.%A0 Are you looking for a gentle giant? Do you have a gentle and patient communication style with animals? Bernie may be the companion for you.%A0 Bernie is a 7-year old Saint Bernard.%A0 He weighs 125 pounds.%A0 He is altered, up-to-date on all vaccinations, flea and tick prevention, and heartworm medication.%A0 He also had a dental cleaning on intake. %A0 Bernie is an LFAR alum who was returned to the rescue when he started having hip troubles.%A0 LFAR did a series of x-rays, and he has stage 2 hip dysplasia. %A0 Since starting daily anti-inflammatory meds, joint supplements, and 2-3 short walks around the block a day, our boy has got some spring back in his step! He does not know any basic commands, but his mellow personality makes that manageable.%A0 Bernie is friends with all humans and animals, but he needs people to remember that he can't hear them approaching so he startles easily. Once he knows a friend is here, he is ready for hugs and cuddles.%A0 He is is free to roam the house day and night without problem.%A0 He is not a good candidate for crate training.%A0 He could be happy with other pets or as an only dog. %A0 Are you right for Bernie? * Someone in your home works remotely most or part of the time- Bernie needs a mid-day potty break in his old(er) age. * No children under 16 * No fence required, but you can take him on short walks on a leash each day * A home with NO STAIRS TO MAIN LEVEL or an apartment on the first floor (current foster home has 2 steps up to the door and he can manage that fine) * A minivan that is easier to get in and out of or a willingness to use a doggie ramp to keep his hips healthy; he will not allow anyone to pick him up * Comfortable leaving well-behaved Bernie free range of the house- not a good candidate for crate training * Enjoy having a shadow throughout the day and snuggling as much as possible with a big teddy bear Bernie is currently fostered in Bowling Green, KY.%A0Out of respect for our foster family's time and privacy, we do NOT arrange meet and greets without an application on file.
