About Chewy

This handsome chap is Chewy. He's about 5 years old and weighs 20 lbs. Chewy's the kind of dog that likes to pretend he's in charge when he really isn't. In his foster home, he likes to follow his foster mom from room to room and if he could talk, he'd probably say he's checking to make sure she's doing all her foster mom stuff exactly right. In reality, though, he's more of a baby who needs the security of knowing that his human is right there within sight. The truth was revealed the first time his foster mom left him at home while she went out and he cried and fussed to be with her! (He's much better about that now.) When he's out and about and encounters new people, Chewy continues his 'Chewy in charge' charade by barking at the strangers with great gusto. He wouldn't dream of hurting anyone, but the bark keeps people at a distance and that's really what he wants. For the folks who are patient and give him time to feel comfortable with them, Chewy drops the false bravado and can be quite friendly. Back at his foster home, Chewy considers himself the CCO (that's Canine Compliance Officer) of the resident dogs, but they're not having any of it. If he tries to tell them what to do, occasionally it can lead to a kerfuffle. He might do best as an only dog with a person who can help him feel safe and secure. (He can get along with other dogs, but you would need to supervise their interactions and be willing to work with an insecure dog.) Chewy truly has a gentle heart, and you'll know this the minute you watch how he cares for his fluffy toys. He most definitely has favorites that he tends to as if they were his children. He nibbles them gently, never ripping them apart as so many dogs do. In fact, he has had the same toys since April, and they're still in great shape. And as you can see in one of his photos, Chewy likes to chill with his stuffed buddies at nap time. Chewy is house-trained, will go to the door when he needs to go out, and can be trusted to be left uncrated at home alone for several hours at a time.
