About Freya

Adoption Fee: $350
Shiba Inu
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Lovely, affectionate, healthy 4 year old Shiba girl. Black and Tan, approximately 16 pounds. Perfect house manners, loves to hang out with her person but she is also happy to entertain herself. A hobbit-sort, she is not looking for any grand adventure - quiet walks around the neighborhood, hanging out with her person in the kitchen or lounging with you in front of the tv are the things she seems to enjoy most in life. Rather lazy and with low prey-drive for her breed, she is the 'Ferdinand the Bull' of Shiba Inus: she just seems to want to spend her time sitting under her favorite tree and smelling the flowers. She is eager to bond with her own human, and will bestow upon that individual boundless loyalty and affection. Unfortunately, she is by nature a one-person dog, and from her life-experience is a deeply insecure dog, so I think she would do best with an individual owner. She clearly has zero interest in being a 'family dog'. While she is charming and delightful with other dogs, kids, and (it seems) cats whom she meets out in the world on walks or visits, she will not tolerate any competition for her owner's affection within her own home. While I'm sure that she (like any dog) would love a home with a fenced yard, she would also be absolutely fine with apartment living. She would probably prefer an owner who works from home or is retired, but I think she could also be very happy with someone who works away full time. Finally, she does not enjoy city life - she lived the first 3.5 years of her life with an active, on-the-go, young family in NYC and did not appreciate or thrive in that lifestyle. She will be a beautiful, easy, low-maintanence, entertaining, affectionate and devoted companion for the right person. She's perfect for someone - you just need to find each other! I am deeply invested in finding her an ideal forever home. If you have any other pets, if you live in a city, if you have young children, or if you and your partner dream of being co-parents to your future furkid, then, this is not the dog you are looking for! On the other hand, if you live near me in Southeastern NH or Northeastern MA, and you live a quiet life in the suburbs (or country) by yourself (or possibly with a partner who has a friendly ambivalence towards dogs) and you think Freya looks like she might be a match for you, please contact me. All adoption fees will be donated to whatever nonprofit rescue organization (501c) helps me find this dog her forever home (if you are reading this here, that would be rescueme.org). Please be prepared to provide references, show up for an in person interview (with the dog and with us (yes, we ALL have to like you :))) and to sign a contract. We will miss Freya when she leaves here, but we currently have 8 wonderful dogs of our own (7 Shibas and 1 Kai Ken) who all unanimously hate Freya (with reason). Freya wants to be (and I think was meant to be) someone's adored one and only, and since we are dog people who have always (and will always) lived with a pack, we cannot accommodate her. ADDITIONAL NOTES: as of 10/16, I am still searching for Freya's match. Please understand that 1) I will only consider you for her if you are local to me (within easy driving distance, because you're likely to need to make several trips before the adoption is finalized) and 2) that she cannot live in the same house with ANY other pets (seriously'| she is deeply insecure and sadly will not tolerate any perceived competition within her home). Also, please understand that Freya is a Shiba Inu (a very odd Shiba, but still a Shiba - if you are not familiar with the breed, please do your research before considering her!). Patience and kindness will earn a Shiba's affection, but earning and keeping any Shiba's respect takes a tremendous amount of effort and consistency. Shibas have the reputation of being difficult dogs because they tend to be discerning creatures who do not love unconditionally (you have to work for it!) and most devoted Shiba owners (myself included) consider this to be breed 'feature' rather than a 'bug'. If you are hoping for instant adoration or automatic obedience, please understand that this (or any Shiba) is probably not the right dog for you.
