I am heartbroken, angry, and riddled with guilt. I just received a text message from Dallas Animal Services notifying me that they have my dog. Confused (as both our dogs were safely at home in blissful comfort), I called. The officer informed me that a dog I had rescued from a kill list in 2011 had been surrendered by his actual owners due to medical needs. I had only had him for a couple weeks before my landlord had illegally entered my home through the backyard while I was at work and saw him in the house in his crate. He called me saying that he had to be removed from the premise immediately. My rental agreement had no animal specific clause, but I surrendered him to Plano Animal Shelter for fear of losing our home. However, I did check regularly until he was adopted. Fast forward 10 years. I drove to Dallas Animal Shelter to see him for myself. They would not let me touch him unless I reclaimed him. I lost it in front of the Rep, but they were very kind and trying to find the best way to help him. It is clear he has been neglected for quite a while. They think he has a dislocated hip, and snaps/bites due to the pain. He cannot walk, and it is clear he needs immediate medical attention. Now for the excuse. We cannot take him. We already have 2 geriatric dogs, a cat with FIV, and a murder-bird. I travel constantly and have 3 incredibly active teenagers. Our life cannot accommodate his needs. But I cannot ignore the fact that I feel responsible for him, so if anyone knows any shelter or rescue that can help him, please contact me at 214-458-5990, his chip ID is A1129185. His name is/was Leo, and he is 12 years old, over-weight, with a potentially dislocated hip. Dallas Animal Services says he has 5 days (Sept 15), until he is considered to be Euthanized or put on the main adoption floor. I want to do whatever I can to make sure the last few years of his life is at least better than what he experienced before. When we had him, he got along great with my then 3 and 5 yr old, and my 8yr old Great Pyrenees. I am not aware of his current temperament other than being in pain.
