About HOWIE

HOWIE is a 5-yr-old pitbull we found tied to a tree in a parking lot while living in Bakersfield, CA. We decided to rescue Howie since we didn't know of any No Kill shelters in the area and were worried he'd be killed because of his breed. Howie is a 65lb lap dog who loves being with his humans. He is very athletic and loves walking/hiking, running, swimming/dock diving, and playing fetch or he's completely happy just cuddling on the couch all day. Howie is a fast learner, food motivated and loves to please his humans. Howie is looking for his new forever home where he can be the only dog. He currently lives with two small terriers and all 3 dogs resource guard food & treats, which has lead to fights between the dogs. Howie also has some leash reactivity that started after being attacked by an off-leash dog while we lived in CA. Howie has shown great improvement on the leash with professional training and the advice of a behavioral veterinarian. Howie is crate trained but can be trusted to stay home alone out of the crate all day. Howie also lived with two cats we were fostering at the time and had no issues with either of the cats. In fact, most evenings you could find one of them snuggled up to Howie as he slept. Howie has worked with multiple trainers and is well behaved and knows many commands (sit, stay, here/touch, down, off, leave it, let's go, shake, roll over). Ideally, we would love to see Howie with a new family with a large secure yard where he could run free without worrying about frightening encounters with other dogs, and a pool would be a huge bonus because Howie loves the water so much! We are willing to provide professional training sessions for Howie and his new family to ensure success in his forever home. Howie can be transported virtually anywhere in the USA for FREE!
