About Cowboy

Akita
Sex: Male

This animal is available to licensed rescue groups only. Please do not enquire unless with a licensed rescue group. Cowboy is an urgent rescue at the shelter due to behavior concerns. He was surrendered by his owners due to starting to show aggression towards children. They had Cowboy since he was a puppy and he lived with children (ages 7 yrs to 14 yrs old), adults, and a cat. They reported that Cowboy was friendly with women and tolerant of men. Cowboy was left free run of the home when left alone, is housebroken, likes tennis balls and stuffed toys, likes playing fetch and tug, and he knows several tricks (sit, shake, and lay down). They recommend a home without any children or other pets. Cowboy started muzzle training at the home after he attacked another dog about a year ago and caused significant damage to the other dog. Someone who knows the dog said that Cowboy tolerated other large dogs through the fence but was forwardly reactive towards the small dog. The owner started to muzzle Cowboy when he was around children and all people had to be mindful of the dogs space when the dog was sleeping. Staff and volunteers have been getting him out and walking him. So far they haven't had any issues with him. When in his kennel he can be reactive towards some people and will growl and alarm bark. Medical staff was able to get him into the exam room on 8/26 and Cowboy did quite well and was food motivated. Due to his reported aggression they put a basket muzzle on him and smeared food on the inside to distract him. We were able to neuter him on 8/27 and while under we found his left ear was moderately inflamed so we treated that ear while he was under anesthesia. He is NOT available for direct adoption.
