About Tanjiro

Adoption Fee: $50
Siberian Husky / Shiba Inu
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Tanjiro is at a local shelter. We fostered him over the weekend and have built a profile on him. The shelter really doesn't have much posted on the animals in terms of their temperament and personality. First and foremost, he is heartworm positive. This wasn't listed on the shelter's site and we weren't informed until we were signing papers to foster him. No idea how advanced it is. He is very thin for his size. He could easily gain 5-10 lbs more. We're not sure if he's just a picky eater and we haven't found the right food, if it's a behavioral thing, or if the heartworms have progressed so much that it affects his appetite. THE SHELTER WILL NOT TREAT THE HEARTWORMS. They are leaving it for whoever adopts him to solve. He seems to be more Shiba than Husky. Doesn't really sing/howl like a husky and doesn't have the super-fluffy fur. He's surprisingly quiet unless he's really wound up and encouraged to bark/play. He's EXTEREMELY intelligent. Learning basic commands in a day or two. He doesn't respond to his name. A quick whistle will generally get his attention. When walking a 'come on/come here' works well. He seems to be housebroken. Doesn't do a great job of indicating when he needs to go out, but he does seem to try. Seems to be great with other dogs and people. No aggression seen in public, even when being barked at by other dogs. Always eager to meet new people. He's unsure with cats. We have 3 and he hasn't chased them, though if they ran from him, he probably would. Cats that stand their ground seem to throw him off. He was kinda clueless as to what he was looking at. He overtly avoided the one cat who hissed and swatted when he got too close. He seemed more curious than anything else. As the cats calmed down, he kind of just ignores them. When inside, he's kind of lazy and lays around, but will play at the drop of a hat if offered. When outside, he's a ball of energy and wants to RUN. A harness is required. He'll choke himself with a collar. He MUST be leashed at all times if outside. He WILL run off if given the chance. A fenced in yard is needed to even consider letting him run around untethered. Loves tennis balls and fluffy toys to rip to pieces. He's a picky eater. We have 3 types of dog food and he turned his nose up at all 3. A blend of food seemed to do better. He absolutely wants to eat human food and wet cat food. If unobserved, he will take it. We put him outside while eating and feeding the cats. Seems to like dry cat food, but doesn't go for it explicitly. Does not show defensive traits with humans taking his toys or food. He DOES show some defensiveness around his food bowl towards other animals, but only if they come near it while he's there. Not sure if it's temporary from being in the shelter or not. No idea if it could be trained out, or if he needs to be fed separately. Doesn't mind feet, mouth, belly, or privates being touched. You can pretty easily manipulate him to put on a harness or groom.
