About Poppy

Meet Poppy This young pup, Poppy, is an amazing girl. She is absolutely adorable with a large side of sweetness. Poppy is thought to be a 10 month old boxer/retriever mix. She is a compact girl of solid muscle with a gorgeous black and white coat. And, she has the most earnest and warmest of brown eyes. Since arriving, Poppy has quickly become a favorite. Poppy loves hooman companionship. When she first arrived, she was a bit exuberant and a 'wild child,' having been neglected her whole life. However, after learning that she's safe, while Poppy still has a lot of energy, it's much more focused. She responds well to gentle training and a treat certainly helps. Poppy loves when a hooman sits in her kennel with her. She loves the attention and calms down to quietly play with her toys or chew a bone. The first time she ever had a bone brought tears to our eyes. She was so proud, happy and excited to have such a treat, and she was always okay to share her treat with her hooman. Poppy could spend hours chewing her bone as long as her person was nearby. Poppy connects with her people. She wants to please and she welcomes attention. She's learning to walk well on a leash. She can be a little eager to get going, but she is learning how to slow down. She will do best with an active person or family. Poppy will want to be a part of the mix. Poppy has been playing with another of our shelter dogs and the two have become fast friends. We're not sure how she feels about cats, but we'll test her for potential adopters. Poppy travels well in a car and likes to watch the cars go past. Poppy is going through so many changes since arriving. She is learning so much and she's eager to take it all in, as long as she has a trusted hooman with her. Once attached, she'll be a loyal companion. She is a lot of fun. We envision Poppy hiking and camping or even becoming a terrific running buddy. Poppy has captured our hearts for who she is now and for who she'll be as she continues to settle and feel safe. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out of state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship nor do we transport them to their new homes. Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are primarily owner relinquished and also accepted from local Animal Control. The facility usually is operating at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open.
