About Hunter

Adoption Fee: $25.00
Black Mouth Cur mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Hello! Hunter is a very affectionate Black Mouth Cur, that was adopted under the false assumption that he was labeled a Labrador with coloring. Hunter is possibly about to turn 3, based on veterinarians consultation. Hunter loves to play, if a bit rough, and is slightly ok with other/small dogs, except for his food protection he displays occasionally. I would advise to have him with a large property, and lots of walks to help with his energy, or even playing fetch a lot(still trying to get him to put it in my hand). We noticed Hunter was probably abandoned for sometime as he was very food protective in the beginning though never toward people, even while boarded during a vacation the vets said that he was protective of his food when other dogs would go by, but had no issue with humans. I would not advise having him around small children, not that he is actively aggressive to them, just that the high energy of the kids and high pitch voices gets him excited to play, and as I said before he plays a bit rough. We have a neighbor at our other house in Florida that has some toddlers and for the most part they like him, but when he starts chasing them after they have been playing with them, it's an issue as he has knocked them over, grabbed their clothes and nipped them. With teenagers I think he would be better as he is to strong for our 11 y/o son, and we warned our son to be gentle and not get him riled up as he weighs more than him. Unfortunately our son did not listen and was bitten by the dog on the face , our son has not been nice to the dog and was trying to be nice by cuddling with him, unfortunately it was while the dog was eating and being food protective. We told our son to leave any dog alone while it's eating, and had to check on a car crash outside our house at the time, and we heard the dog start growling before we went outside, we told our son to calm down and leave the dog alone as he was eating. My spouse said the same thing while getting ready to follow me outside, that is when the bite happened. The dog knew he was in trouble and our son has been depressed because he knows the dog needs to go. I will say again that Hunter is very affectionate, and loves to cuddle, sleep next to you in bed/couch, and will sit next to you and watch tv. He enjoys sleeping in dog beds sometimes, though he has torn up a few. He loves to tear up dog toys and get all the fluff out, but if the toy doesn't have fluff it doesn't matter to him as he still loves to play with it. He is not much of a ball dog but is getting there, and loves to play tug of war. He has a very non expressive face with those golden eyes at first but once you get to know him you see the expressions much better.
