Our handsome Copper is that exceptional, all around family dog, that is rare in Rescue. Copper loves everybody, and has not flinched at all during a rescue process that leaves lesser dogs rattled. We've been trying to piece together Copper's backstory, and here's what we think we know: At the age of two, Copper was surrendered to a rural Tennessee shelter by his owner. He was pulled by a local rescue that transports beleaguered Southern dogs north where their chances of adoption are improved. Copper was lucky to land at St.Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey. St. Hubert's transferred him to us so that we could find his forever home. Throughout the chaotic rescue process, Copper has been an absolute charmer. He is so full of life and personality, and, just two, he has a bit of the puppy Mojo going on. Copper is like a kid in a candy shop, soaking up new experiences with sheer glee. He is a super dog that would do well in any type of environment. Copper appears to be a Blue Tick Coon Hound, and he lives up to their lovable reputation. He is a medium sized dog, at a lean weight of 50 pounds. His short, flat coat is largely black and copper colored, with a blue ticking pattern on his chest and legs. He has striking, translucent light hazel eyes. Copper has a mischievous twinkle in his eyes, and he always looks like he's flashing a giant smile. Copper is a very happy-go-lucky guy, and would be a great addition to an active family with older, dog savvy kids. He is friendly and will give everyone in the family equal attention. Copper is not one to play favorites, and he is fairly stranger friendly. He could also join an active single or couple, who can provide at least one to two leisurely leash walks, so that Copper can meander and stop to smell the 'roses.' Scent hounds are extremely easy to manage because the leisurely walk that engages their senses, provides much needed mental and physical exercise. Copper also needs a fair amount of exercise and focused playtime so that he does not become bored and get into mischief. He would benefit greatly from ongoing obedience training, which is helpful in providing additional mental stimulation. He is learning his commands, although he can become distracted easily, but he is treat motivated. He responds well to Positive Reinforcement and Leadership techniques, and seems to enjoy his training sessions. He seems to be a confident boy, ready and willing to work. Copper has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during his transition to a new home. He has been neutered, and has received routine vaccinations and health screenings.
