About APOLLO - Afghan Save

Adoption Fee: $550
German Shepherd / Lab
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

APOLLO arrived from Afghanistan on 20 April 2021. Apollo is neutered rabies, core vaccines, heartworm & tick disease tested negative, de-wormed, monthly preventatives and microchipped. When he left Afghanistan he weighed around 50 pounds and she has an estimated date of birth of 1 March 2020. We do not know what breed of dog he is, so it is important for families to take the time to watch the video's and look at the pictures to be sure that they have the lifestyle that this beauty needs. When Apollo was found, some kids had been cutting his ears off with scissors which is why he has short ears. They have healed and do not bother him. During his time in Afghanistan she became best friends with Wazari, who was also transferred to GaDaH at the same time as Apollo. He is great with other dogs and initially cautious with people, but soon warms up and is a total love bug. When Apollo arrived at the rescue I noticed that he was limping on his front leg. I monitored it for a little while, as he had been in a crate for two days during his journey from Afghanistan to Maine, however, it didn't stop and so I took him to the vet for x-rays. These x-rays are in his photo's on his page on the rescue website. They showed that Apollo had Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD or OD), which is an inflammatory condition that occurs when the diseased cartilage separates from the underlying bone. It most commonly affects the shoulder joint but the elbow, hip, or knee (stifle) may also be involved. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/osteochondritis-dissecans-or-ocd-in-dogs I did discuss surgery with the vet, however, he strongly believes that this will self-heal over the next year and so Apollo is currently on pain/anti-inflammatory medications on an 'as needed' basis. Other than limping when he has run a little too much, the OCD is not affecting him. He loves to play and run and chase, but does stop if he has done a little too much. Apollo needs a patient, loving, active family. A family that understands that another change is going to be very stressful, it will take time for him to build trust and confidence and so going slow is important. It is required that the family does have a secure fenced in yard for safety issues and they must be active as Apollo is a medium/large sized, young adult who would benefit from an active life. He is such a very sweet, loving dog, he loves to play and chase with other dogs, and it would be wonderful if the family would consider adopting Wazari with him, however, just having another dog for him to play with would be great. Apollo uses the dog door to go outside, however, he will not know to let families know he needs to go outside and so house training is to be expected. All dogs are fed Rachael Ray Nutrish PEAK Natural Dry Dog Food, Grain Free Western Grasslands Recipe with Bison. Rachael Ray Nutrish Peak Dog Food receives the Dog Food Advisor's second-highest tier rating of 4.5 stars. APOLLO is available for adoption for an adoption fee of $550 Due to borders being closed, it is up to families to call the US and Canadian borders to find the current details on border crossing. Animal Welfare is deemed essential in the US, but quarantine rules entering back into Canada must be followed.
