About Lela

Hello. I know you hear this all the time. But this truly does break my heart. I have an 11 yr old border collie/lab that I have to rehome. I have had her, her whole life. I rescued her from somebody going to dump her at the pound when she was 4 weeks old. I truly love her with all my heart. When she was about 3 years old she started getting aggressive with my other dogs. I have managed for 8 years to keep them separated at all cost. I have had 2 trainers come in but nether worked. She needs to be an only pet. She has attacked 4 times now over the 8 years. Each one being an accident that they got together. Not a bad record for 8 years, but one attack is one too many if your the dog getting attacked. I sold my home but haven't found a new one yet. So I found a pet friendly apartment and took a 6 month lease. Last week during the move the 4th attack happened. It was the most horrific thing I ever witnessed. She attacked my 8 yr old Papillion. She was in critical condition at VSS west for 8 days. Thank you to God she survived. But she tore her up severely. I am 64 yrs old and I tripped and fell injuring myself trying to get to them to save her. I had to crawl on my stomach and had to watch in horror as I tried to get to them. I am terrified that this could happen again. I am living in a pet friendly apartment I am surrounded by other dogs. That means I can't take her for walks. She is very very strong and active still. I wouldn't be able to hold onto her if we came across another dog, which we certainly would. Not to mention my dogs being in the same apt with her. I just can't let it happen again. Not fair to my little ones. I have to keep her Lela, in a crate at all times. I transfer her from a crate in the apt to a crate outside my door on the patio. This breaks my heart beyond belief. She cries because she wants to run. She craves attention. She needs more then what I can give her right now. I have been in rescue for a long time. This goes against everything I have ever worked for. But because I love her, I need to do this. I have found many dogs their forever homes over the years. But this is a tough one with her being animal aggressive. I don't know what else to do. Everybody is telling me to put her down. But I just don't have the heart to do that. It is hard enough when they are sick. But she still has alot of time left hopefully and I want to give her every chance she deserves. She is a great dog otherwise. She loves people, and LOVES to play!! She always has a toy in her mouth. Thinks the whole world is her playground!! She loves water. The hose is her favorite thing. She always has a smile on her face. Crate trained. She is a counter surfer, never could break her of that. But listens to men well. She is very very active and strong. Spayed. UTD on her shots. Takes the one year proheart shot for heartworm. Just got it last month. I am home with her all the time and she has only known me as an owner. I honestly do love her. But she needs more. A 6' fenced yard would do her a world of good. She is feeling frustrated I am sure, and I fear her aggression will only get worse if things don't change for her. If I would have known all this was going to happen, I never would have attempted to move. But I needed to because it was 2 story house, I have bad knees and a bad back and need a one story house. Please Don't judge me. I am looking out for her best interests. I just want the best life possible for her. Please help me. I don't want to put her down. I just can't. I live in O'Fallon MO.
