About Rocko

Meet our big boy Rocko! Rocko is a 5 year old Dachshund mix who came into rescue with his fur brother, Boo, when his owner had to go into a retirement home and could not take them with her. Rocko was a very loved dog, so much that when his mom found out she wasn't going to be able to keep him and his furbrother she spoiled them during the time she had left with lots of love and attention, and treats. Rocko now weighs 33 pounds, which is entirely too heavy for his frame. We are working on a diet for him, but so far, he doesn't seem interested in any kind of dog food. It seems like he was eating a lot of people food! He is eating a healthy weight dog food with a bit of boiled skinless chicken breast, green beans, and brown rice. That is mostly so we can encourage him to eat while we transition him to dog food. He needs a person who will take his diet seriously to get him back into good health so he can enjoy his life fully! Rocko is a happy, confident boy, and his tail is always wagging. He is very sweet and loves affection of any kind. He especially likes to cuddle, either on the couch or up in the bed. One on one time makes him so happy! He will turn those big beautiful brown eyes on you and make you melt when he is getting some loving. Rocko is a good boy who potties outside, has good manners, no bad behaviors, and rarely barks. Because of his weight, he has to be closely monitored in the house. If he jumps off the bed or sofa, he could very likely hurt his back. He doesn't only need to be lifted up for cuddle time, he also needs to be helped back down! Rocko sleeps in a dog bed where he can see his person. He gets along with all people and all the dogs in his foster home. He would be good in a home with other dogs, and would likely be ok as an only dog too. Rocko does not pay any attention to the cat in his foster home, and would probably be fine with cats. He has not been around kids since he has been with us and we are not sure how he would do with them. Rocko does show some playfulness and has moments of excitement; however, his weight is really holding him back. When the dogs are outside chasing each other, Rocko will cheer them on with his bark. He will even show extra energy when called inside and bounces up the stairs. We are sure, as he loses weight, he will show more energy! He's still a young guy! Rocko has shown interest in toys and when the others are all playing and chasing balls, he will pick one up and carry it around. He enjoys walks around the yard and short walks down the street for exercise, and does well on a leash and is good on car rides. He would like a fenced yard, but would probably do ok being walked on a leash several times a day. Rocko has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, neutered, heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration.
