About GARTH

Adoption Fee: 150
Lab / Border Collie
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

***NEEDS FUREVER HOME*** Currently in Eagle This 5-year-old black lab mix named GARTH has been through a lot, but he is a sweet and grateful boy. Because of the condition that we found him as a stray, he had to have his eye removed. He is now in an experienced, loving foster home where we have learned a lot about him. GARTH is a very sweet, loving, kind boy that loves affection. He learned the new house routine very quickly. He enjoys several walks per day and has been running 3-5 miles with the foster dad, so a home with an active family member would be best. Foster dad believes that GARTH will need time (about 2 weeks) to feel comfortable with his new family. In off-leash doggy playgroups, GARTH is a high-energy player who is still learning to accept corrections in play (see videos), but is mellow with some dogs (see video with St. Bernard named MURPHY). GARTH jumps right into cars to go on adventures, but is still a little unsure about moving cars on his walks (artifact likely from his background living on his own). He did very well on a recent 5-mile-hike that included lots of strangers, another dog, and sometimes mountain bikes and loose dogs coming our way. GARTH is house-trained and crate-trained. GARTH is sensitive to his space and will compensate for his eye in a few different ways. He needs someone who will be patient with him and sensitive to his needs. This person should be a calm leader who sets and enforces boundaries. GARTH moves his head around often to see all of his surroundings and feels most comfortable when people give him space until he decides to move closer. He needs people to be sensitive to his space and not approach him when he is feeling vulnerable (e.g., when he cannot see your hands or when he is laying down). In these cases, he will protect himself by giving a short warning growl. Allowing GARTH to come up to new people is best. GARTH has been non-reactive to ducks and cats that he has seen on his walks. He has always been a little scared of vehicles driving by him, but we have recently seen that he has been reactive to bikes. The foster will be trying out a harness to possibly make him feel more secure. The rescue was only able to pay for this type of training courtesy of some generous end-of-year donors.
