[Read About Natural Incontinence Care] Beatrice, like most dogs, lives in the moment. She doesn't think about the past, just today. But, like all dogs in the rescue, Beatrice comes with her own history, and to understand who Beatrice is today, we have to understand the past. Beatrice was turned into the animal shelter some years ago. The family that should have been forever, returned her to the shelter a year later, obese, with a urinary tract infection, leaking urine, the skin on her belly, legs and other parts all scalded from lying in urine. Beatrice was now in the shelter again, and there was no way she was ever going to find a home. Beatrice made the hours-long journey to Coastal, a happy girl. She didn't know how bad she smelled. She didn't know how filthy she was. She didn't show the pain she had to have been in from the skin infections and the scalding burns. All she knew is that she had a new friend, and she was so grateful. When we got Beatrice to the vet, it didn't take long to realize that incontinence for her had been a long-term issue. It had been a lifetime issue. She was born with a congenital defect that didn't allow the urine to drain like a normal dog. Without surgery, medicine was never going to help her. She underwent surgery not long after to correct the defect. Sweet Beatrice had lived all of her life without diagnosis, treatment or care, and she had been horribly neglected. The fur was so matted and sticky with urine that the mats had to be shaved. No amount of shampoo or perfume could take away the smell. It simply had to fade away. So, yes, like all of our dogs, Beatrice comes with baggage. She comes with a past. And to understand just how strong, resilient, and how great she is in the present, now you know her past. One day, Beatrice will find her forever home, and when she does walk into that door and relax on her bed, she will finally open her suitcase and show the baggage she chooses to carry with her. Hers isn't baggage of sadness, anger or regret. When she opens her suitcase out comes happiness, love and joy. And why shouldn't it? Beatrice has the perfect name, meaning 'She who brings happiness.' Friendly and easygoing, Beatrice lives her life one day at a time. She loves people, and she loves her walks with her foster mom. She's been walking three times a day and has lost more than 24 pounds. She loves hikes to. She may not be a very boisterous dog, but she does sometimes get the zoomies, especially before her morning walks. Life has not slowed her down. For Beatrice, 5 is just a number, and 5 is the new 2. Don't worry, though, she will stay by your side while you work to keep up. She loves to be with her person, but if you need to go out to dinner or grocery shopping, she promises not to rearrange the furniture while you're gone. When you see Beatrice, the first thing you notice are her beautiful blue eyes. Looking into them can lead you right into her soul, the soul that wants to live every day in the moment, making the best of what life now has to offer her, sharing those moments with the family that will walk by her side forever. Until then, she has her bag packed, and she is ready to go. If you have any questions about Beatrice or her current medications, please email us at, [email protected].
