About Buddy

Adoption Fee: $150
German Shepherd mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Buddy is a German Shepherd, somewhere between 3-5 years old. Buddy came to us as a rescue after being found lying in the middle of the road, out in the county. It was clear right away that Buddy was having issues walking and was first thought to have been hit by a car. He was definitely in pain, but he was also very hungry and it was apparent he had been on his own for quite some time. During his initial evaluation and follow up with the vet, it was determined his physical problems are likely congenital, rather than originating from a previous injury. Buddy's left front wrist can often be unsteady; a brace may offer improvement, especially during longer periods of 'doggie adventure.' His right front foot/wrist also has problems and causes balance issues. His right rear foot has two upturned toes that the vet referred to as 'congenital' and he likely has arthritis in his wrist joints. Buddy's physical problems do cause some limitations at this time - some minor issues with balance, which are mostly cumbersome when he is using stairs. Although, Buddy is an independent soul and is pretty determined. He is more than capable and usually will figure out how to get where he wants to go. In fact, he has come such a long way! He came into foster care towards the end of May. At that time, he was mal-nourished and in so much pain, that his foster humans had to carry him where he needed to go. Now, Buddy is conquering stairs, going on short walks, has gained weight and no longer is needing pain medication! This boy is a rock star of strength, perseverance and gentleness! We believe with time and consistent care, Buddy may be able to withstand even more physical activity. For now, he loves to be scratched, chase his ball around the house and enjoys light walks. Buddy would do best in a home that can provide an area of 'calm' when he needs it, so as to not make his condition worse. He loves being with people, and although he has not been around children while in foster care, he would likely enjoy well 'dog-mannered' children. He is a gentle soul after all. :) He is also good with kitties, but he does need some time getting used to other dogs. However, after weeks of slow introduction to his foster canines, once they were let loose, they hit it off perfectly! He enjoyed (supervised) interactive play time and genuinely was happy to be with other canine friends. This is still an area of concern though, as any new canine introduction will be a challenge for him with his physical condition. His fosters used a gate to separate him from the other dogs for weeks so there was sniffing and limited interaction, without the initial physical stress for Buddy. He listens very well though and is as easy going as it gets! He does great indoors, as he is potty trained and is content to lounge with his people for hours at a time. Buddy needs a companion that will understand his limitations and encourage him using patience and love. PLEASE only apply if you can give this boy a forever home. It is imperative that we find a home where Buddy can live out his years loved and treated as a family member. Please go to our website for an application at WWW.LAFPOGCW.ORG
