About Clementine

American Staffordshire Terrier / Pit Bull
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

Clementine lived her whole life with one family. It seems she was bred by them multiple times, and from the owner surrender notes it seems she was well cared for and loved by her family. They brought her to the NYC Animal Care and Control shelter when she growled at the 3 year old child in the home. However, they said she had a wonderful relationship with the 8 year old, so it seems that something must have happened to prompt that response from her. After arriving at the ACC, the stress and noise of that kennel environment broke her spirit. She began to spin in circles in her kennel obsessively until she would collapse. She began to cage fight with other dogs and shut down until finally she was put on the list to be euthanized. We looked at her behavior notes and saw how different they were from the dog described by her previous family, and decided to take a chance on her, in hopes that in a home environment she would recover. When she first arrived to her foster home, she was still very shut down. A week later she gave us her first tail wag, the next week she finally ASKED to be pet, and from there she has slowly come back to life. Clementine is a beautiful soul, who loves car rides, sleeping in front of the big window in her foster home, and playing with toys. She is great at fetch, loves going on hikes, and bonds strongly to her people. She is very smart, eager to please, and is a wonderful companion if you are still working virtually from home, often popping up in video chat work meetings with her foster family. Clementine has come far enough in her behavioral rehabilitation that we feel she is ready to start seeking an adoptive home, however, she still has a very long way to go. An adoptive family will need to be prepared to continue her training to help her work on her separation anxiety, fear of new situations and environments, and continue completing her housebreaking (although she is 90% there!). She will need a family willing to commit to her and stay committed. Clementine is very sensitive, especially to change, to being adopted and returned could be very hard on her. For this reason, we want to be sure her new family is experienced with dogs like her, and is ready to continue her training program, so that her adoption can be successful.
