About Rudy

Adoption Fee: $500
Great Dane
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

If you haven't already heard of him here, meet Rudy. Rudy has been in my care for a year now, and with the rescue for just a bit longer. Rudy is a small 110 lbs. Great Dane (yep, we had him DNA tested) that is about 1 %BD years old. Rudy had a rough start on life. Malnourished, sick, and injured when he arrived, we have nursed him back to health. His right front leg now has 2 metal plates and a dozen screws holding it together. He spent 3 months recovering from that surgery while still a puppy. He's undersized and under socialized, but he's making progress. In a nutshell, he's scared of the things he didn't get to experience in his youth. Now...If you are feeling sad for him and want to shelter him, this isn't the right pup for you. Yes, he had it rough in the beginning, but he needs to be given opportunities at the right rate to grow and be happy. The first time he walked after his surgery, he growled at a fire hydrant. He used to pull to the opposite end of the leash if he saw a trash can. He hated walking by big cars. In the Home Depot parking lot he just barked at the store from the parking lot. He does better with all of those now. Not perfect, but better every time. He's still scared of thinks, and he barks at sounds that bother him. He knows he's not supposed to, and you can tell he barks before he things (often looking over at you right after like 'oops'). In the house, he's pretty much perfect (except for barking at noises outside). He's a cuddle bug. If I'm working at home, he's normally curled up behind my chair. It's cute, but it makes it tough to get out! He sleeps at my feet unless I'm on the couch. If I sit down on a couch, he comes over and throws his head (and sometimes he paws) across my lap. If he's asleep on a couch and I lay on a different couch, he gets up, stumbles over, and curls up next to me. He wants to please, and has picked up most obedience without any real formal training. So why is he here? I'm posting him because there is a chance that I'll find the right home for him. As long as I have him, I can't foster any additional pups. However, until I find that home, with me he'll stay. I also want to be as honest as possible about who Rudy is, and what you might be in for. He's my buddy, but there is just as good a chance he could be someone else's buddy. Rudy has been great with my kids (5 and 7) and even the neighbor's kids. He does chase the little ones if they run, but only playfully. He has not been tested with cats, and he's introductions with other dogs have been okay. He used to be overexcited but has become better. He'll need a fence if unleashed and unsupervised. His first impulse if truly scared it to run. Think Rudy might be your 110 lbs. of bionic puppy? Let us know. He is neutered, UTD on vaccines & preventatives, house trained and crate trained. He is currently in a foster home in Murfreesboro TN. We do adopt out-of-state but require adopters to travel to the foster home with their current dog/dogs (to ensure they will be friends) to pick up. Out of respect for our foster family's time and privacy, we do NOT arrange meet and greets without an application on file.
