Blu is a miracle dog. He has overcome losing a leg, heartworm, and the resulting complications. He came to IL from TN in the fall of 2020 with heartworm and immediately underwent treatment. Unfortunately, his heartworm was so severe and caught too late to prevent complications. He spent a week at the Emergency Vet and only hours from the rescue, foster, and medical team making a tough decision regarding his future. Luckily, the ER staff saw that he was getting better, and he returned to his foster home to recover. Blu will always be on medications, but in the past month, we have reduced his dependence on several. He was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism as a complication from heartworm and he takes 3 pills daily to manage it. He is happy to take any medication you give him wrapped in a hotdog, leftover dinner, or the special dog pancakes on Sunday mornings. We don't know precisely how old Blu is, but he is an adult in all the ways that matter. He is fully potty trained and sleeps on the floor by you (or under the bed if he can). He doesn't need to be crated and loves to lounge on the couch near you but not too close. Blu is not a snuggling kind of dog. He absolutely wants to be near you, but not on top of you. He walks nicely on a leash and loves to smell everything around him, but due to his medical condition only wants to go for very short walks, a few blocks, and he is tired. He is happy laying in the sun, watching the birds in the yard. Blu is remarkable. He is looking for someone who will commit to giving him the best life possible despite his challenges. He wants to be safe and find his person with whom to bond and follow around the house. He would love a calm, quiet home, maybe with an older female dog or as an only dog. A fenced yard would be preferred because he loves to be outside even if he doesn't run around a lot. If you know of someone looking for a calm, happy (older) gentleman who just wants to be near you (not on top though) Blu is your man. He will do pretty much anything for hot dogs and dances on his hind legs when he hears a leash. He loves to lay around and dances for special treats. He is very calm, sweet, and ready with a happy tail wagging when you say his name. He will bark when he hears someone at the door and try to chase squirrels in the backyard, but with only three legs, he is a bit slower than his foster siblings.
