About Baxter

Adoption Fee: $200
Rat Terrier mix
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Once upon a time there was a sweet puppy named Baxter. He belonged to a family who must have loved him very much because he grew into an affectionate, happy, well-behaved boy. And while his sight probably began to dim very early on (doctors believe he was born with juvenile glaucoma), his enthusiasm and zest for life just grew stronger. Then somehow he became separated from his family and likely wandered alone for days. By the time he was discovered by a Good Samaritan, he was starving and blind. Once in the care of New Rattitude, Baxter adapted beautifully to his foster home and regained his strength, but not his sight. Although a valiant effort was made to manage his glaucoma with daily eyedrops, in the end, his eyes needed to be removed for his own comfort and safety. Miraculously, in spite of all he has been through, Bax has remained an absolute love with a sweet and endearing nature. He loves his people, going for rides in the car, and leash walks. He heads for the door when it's time to go out, and his daily walks give him a bigger life experience as he checks out all the smells. In fact, his enthusiasm often has him leading the pack! He's friendly to everyone he meets, including children, greeting everyone with a wagging tale and a bark to say hello. He also loves to wander the fenced yard of his foster home and lie outside in the sun. He is completely house-trained, comes when called, knows when it's time for treats, and overall is just as good as gold. You'd never know that Baxter is blind--it doesn't stop him at all, and he hopes it won't stop you from seeing what a wonderful companion he would be. In his foster home, Bax moves at his own speed, i.e. his daily routine includes lots of naps, perching on a favorite chair, and snuggling with his foster mom on the couch. Bax gets along nicely with his rattie foster siblings, and their company helps him feel a part of things. Bax is about 10 years old and a solid 22 lbs. He needs you to be home most of the time and to help him engage with his surroundings with daily walks full of sound and smells. He also needs a home with a fenced yard, where he can safely explore, and a canine sibling or two. He is fine with cats and pretty much ignores them, but he won't ignore you! This sweetheart has years of love to give.
