PLEASE READ THIS BIOGRAPHY VERY CAREFULLY AND DO NOT APPLY FOR TANK BASED ON HIS APPEARANCE. Tank is a handsome 5 year old, 18 pound, long hair, dapple piebald looking for a very special dachshund experienced home. This home will be willing to continue Tank's training and spend a lot of time with him. Tank came into our rescue after living his first 5 years as a breeding dog, outside, without being socialized or trained. A gorgeous boy, he made his breeder a lot of money with puppies, and upon coming into the rescue, he retired and began to live his life inside, in a foster home. It was evident to us immediately that Tank had no people or social skills, although he does LOVE people! He had never been played with and didn't understand how to play with people in any capacity. He doesn't understand how toys work, or how to play with other dogs, although he is learning. When Tank first came into our rescue he would jump on tables! He had no concept of living inside and what boundaries are. Since December 2020, with the help of his wonderful foster family, Tank has been learning that a house is a safe and wonderful place. Tank has gone through behavioral training with a professional and has graduated successfully. Tank's trainer described Tank as fear aggressive.%A0Tank is very protective of his foster home and will bark and growl at strangers and unknown dogs. In his foster home Tank is very submissive to family members and dogs he knows well.%A0Tank can be destructive if he is fearful. He has destroyed window screens and screens in porches.%A0Tank has SEVERE separation anxiety and is currently on Prozac to help with this situation. When Tank first came into our rescue he would jump on tables, chairs, counters, and run around inconsolably. He would try to tear apart a crate if he was placed in one. After having him for several months, his foster can now put him in his crate if he must be left for a SHORT time. Tank cannot go to a home where he will be left alone for extended periods of time. At meal time, Tank will share a food bowl but he will growl to protect his chewy treats. He will hide them for later, and his foster mom in Florida finds treats tucked in chairs and couches. Tank is a very intelligent boy who easily learns and understands commands. Tank LOVES to go for walks and loves to go on hiking trails. He loves to climb! Tank is leash trained and gets very excited when he sees his leash. Tank has learned to play a cuddle game with his foster mom on the big bed. This process of trust took considerable time, but it has helped Tank learn that cuddles and loves are wonderful!%A0Tank especially loves to cuddle on the recliner in his foster home. Tank enjoys looking out of a window and loves to lay on the back of a chair or couch to have a good view. Tank is VERY intelligent and knows how to obey commands. He is so smart he can even open cabinet doors, but he will not destroy anything in them. Tank adores treats. Although Tank gets along well with other dogs that he knows, we do not recommend Tank for a home with cats or other small animals as he has a high prey drive. He has gone through screens in his foster home to get to a lizard or a vole.%A0He does not eat them, but he will rip them apart.%A0We do not recommend Tank to a home with children under the age of 13 OR to a home with children under that age who come to visit. Tank is housetrained and knows how to use a doggy door.%A0He does best with a regular schedule of potty breaks. Tank is now able to be in his crate, but he is unable to be in it for extended periods. Like all dachshunds he will need to be confident in his environment to have good potty habits. All rescue dogs go through a period of adjustment, so understanding and patience is important, and Tank will take an extended period of time to adjust. Tank is a loving and sweet boy. He is very loving and relaxed with people he knows. He has learned to quickly accept people who have been welcomed into his foster home. He knows and obeys the command sit, and will wait for his food or treats.%A0Tank will ask for hugs by gently putting his front paws on your knees and when he receives these wonderful cuddles he will make little groaning noises of joy! Tank would do well in a home with another dachshund. Tank requires a home with a fully fenced yard that is at least 5 feet tall and he must be monitored when he goes outside. He has gone over a 4 foot fence in his foster home. We will not consider a home with a chain link fence as Tank will climb it. Do you think that you are the SPECIAL SOMEONE for this remarkable boy? Are you the one who is going to show him the happiness he deserves? Are you going to be the one to earn those cuddles? If you are willing to spend the time, and give Tank your full commitment and love, please apply to adopt this wonderful boy!
