About Penny

American Staffordshire Terrier
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

Big sweetheart? Check. Cuddle bug? Check. Personality plus? Check. These wonderful traits describe Penny, a 6-year old, 50-pound female American Staffordshire Terrier who's ready for a new lease on life! Currently living with a loving foster family in Byram Township, NJ, this Penny from Heaven loves everyone she meets. Like her spirit, Penny's eyes (and of course ears) are irresistible. She is a mood-lifter to say the least. She's also extremely sweet with kids and takes treats very gently from them. Penny has an exuberant happy nature so she tends to get excited, jumpy, and mouthy. Her adopter will need to continue with training to help her learn good manners. She is already showing progress now that she's in a home with proper structure. So far, Penny knows the sit and stay command very well. She also walks easily on a gentle leader harness. Penny for her thoughts? She loves tug of war and fetch... although she doesn't exactly bring it back! She loves to sit in people's laps. And she loves being petted. She's a little stinker though - if you stop petting her, she will lift your arm with her head so you will pet her again. Penny was rescued by Furry Tales International Rescue just hours before she was to be euthanized. Now a proven lucky penny, the fact is she's been through a lot and is still decompressing after losing her home and being in a shelter. As a result, she is nervous at times. For example, she gets very upset when people leave, but calms down in her crate within a few minutes. She'll benefit from someone who isn't gone for long hours at a time. On one occasion, Penny bit her first owner on the arm when she grabbed her keys to leave and put Penny in the crate. She has not shown this behavior in foster care; instead she's been a darling from day one. A recent visit to a veterinary behaviorist verified that Penny's anxiety isn't severe. Confidence is needed to overcome this behavior, but she'll develop that with additional training through positive reinforcement. Penny reportedly gets along with other dogs and cats. She currently lives with a balanced dog but neither pays much attention to the other. To ensure Penny is compatible with another pet, meet and greets are required. Will you make this penny shine once again? She needs someone who is willing to work through her anxiety, keep her well exercised, and continue her training. She is spayed, up-to-date on shots, and healthy except for borderline hypothyroidism. She is house-trained and crate-trained, too. It's no doubt that she deserves a very special family because she's a very special girl!
