About Bruiser

American Staffordshire Terrier mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Five y/o Bruiser was abandoned in the shelter by the only family he's ever known due to 'moving' and now his time is running out. Bruiser's story, told by a shelter volunteer: 'The bags were being packed, the car was loaded up. Boy, oh boy, was I excited! My family bought a new house and we were moving! I couldn't wait for all the new adventures we were going to have together. Moving day had arrived and I sat in the car, tail wagging, grin on my face, looking at the family I'd known all five years of my life...and then the car made an unexpected stop. Animal shelter?? What's that? My family took me out of the car and I happily followed behind because I would follow them anywhere...until I couldn't anymore. My family handed my leash over to a stranger, turned, walked out of the building and their car drove off. I tried to follow them but I couldn't! They must have made a mistake. How could they move into their new home without me? What did I do wrong? I really am a good boy! I sit when I'm told, make friends with people easily and am as handsome as I am kind! Okay, okay...so I don't really like to share my food, but no one has taught me any table manners. I know I could learn how to share, I just need the chance to learn and a home that won't give me up again. My friends at the animal shelter say I'm a 'volunteer favorite,' and I do love my volunteer friends but I really miss having a family of my own...and now I'm told time has become critical. Please help me make it out alive!' According to shelter staff and volunteers, he is extremely well behaved and obedient, never soils his kennel, is quiet/rarely barks, easy to handle on leash, knows sit, gives paw, comes when called, allowed all handling with no problems including when having his teeth examined, is affection-seeking, and an all-around 'well-mannered and very gentle dog' according to staff notes. His time is running out because he does not like his food or bones touched/taken away and he has not been socialized by his previous owners and the shelter has been unable to dog testing due to lack of appropriate greeter dogs. He is reported to be 'dog selective'. Bruiser will need an adult only home (older kids, OK) where they have experience with resource guarding and understand that he needs to be left alone when eating or chewing on bones/toys. He should also go to a solo-pet home, preferably with a fenced yard. Bruiser is neutered and up to date on shots; no other medical issues known.
