About Odie

Adoption Fee: $150
Great Pyrenees mix
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Odie really wants to be in a home where he can do his job of protecting his people without having little children to also live around. He is a Great Pyrenees x Maremma Sheepdog (75% and 25%, respectively), so he is quite intelligent and an independent thinker. He has been with us for almost 3 months, but he is showing his discomfort with young children more and more. He truly wants to be such a good boy, but our home makes it very difficult for him to feel comfortable enough to do that. Odie responds very well to positive training techniques. He walks on a loose leash almost all the time and is fully housebroken (once he accepts your house as his home, he will not have an accident in it or your yard if he can help it). Pyrs are know to bark, and Odie enjoys it, too. He does not bark for us at night, and we have been working with him to get our attention instead of barking to warn us. Food is tricky for Odie. He currently eats a mostly raw diet with a few pieces of kibble occasionally. In our house with kids and cats, Odie becomes distracted and fearful that another creature will take his food, and stops eating. Feeding him in his crate has helped him eat more food without having to hand feed all the time. Odie LOVES cheese, rotisserie chicken, and a medium grilled steak. He has diarrhea sporadically, and we have not been able to identify the cause. He was recently given a clean bill of health. The vet thinks the diarrhea is due to stress. Odie would be a happy pup to look out over your property all day. He enjoys patrolling his territory, so you must have a tall visible fence if you plan on having him in a yard. He could spend hours exploring the woods, streams, and hiking around. He also enjoys snoozing in the coolest part of the house for hours, preferably with a pillow to prop up his head. Odie loves chewing and pulling apart sticks or other things. He does not love playing fetch or chasing a ball. Before living with us, Odie lived with a family who had two children under 3. He would guard the food bowl from the other dogs in the house. The family said Odie would growl softly when their 2 year old would lay on him. The family said their child 'didn't know how strong she was.' We are so sad to look for a new home for Odie, but we think it's what's best for him. We have three young children that just seem to stress him all the time even though my children have been nothing but respectful and kind to him.
