RODRIGO - ID #A76642 Gwinnett County Shelter, Lawrence, GA Rodrigo is an adorable 3 yr old, neutered/fully vetted, HW Negative male pit bull who needs a loving home. Per notes below, he enjoys children and other dogs. He is slow to warm up to you and protective of those he loves. FROM SHELTER: If you are interested in adopting or rescuing Rodrigo, you can reach me at: [email protected] with any questions you have.' 'Key Points: -He is NOT a bite case! -He is fully vetted - neutered -HW negative -He seems to turn his behavior around quickly in the right conditions -There is a good boy in there. He has had 2 lousy owners. -We just need a group to give him the time and structure that he needs. Rodrigo's Story: 'Rodrigo's shelter story starts in October of 2020. We were called out to a home in Gwinnett by a concerned citizen who stated his neighbors were always letting their dog loose and he was chasing people and cars. We spoke with the neighbors down the street, and they said ole Rodrigo had only been around for about a week, and they were feeding him in the open backyard. While our officer was on scene, she was speaking with the homeowners, and Rodrigo was just running around and not caring what was going on. It was not until the children of the home approached our officer that Rodrigo began to take notice, and he didn't like our officer anywhere near those kids. He immediately charged our officer, who retreated to her vehicle and began to request backup. The entire time on scene, Rodrigo was fine with all of the homeowners, and Rodrigo was protecting them. They maintained the story that they did not know the dog, and he did not live there. You couldn't get the dog to leave the property, and he seemed to be perfectly fine with everyone who lived on that property. The following are notes from not too long after his impound: 10.13.2020 I was doing my walkthrough, and this canine was lying in his bed, and his eyes were dilated, but he would not make eye contact. I opened the door to the pen, and he laid down. I was able to go in the pen and he retreated to the back of the pen. I was able to get a leash on him as officer amaro and I needed to check his body condition because I could see some of the spine. I was able to pull him out of the pen and he ran into the pen across from him. I put him back in his pen and he ran right to the bed and laid down. I was able to sit with him and after a while he allowed me to start petting him. After several minutes of petting him I was able to remove the leash from him and walk out of the pen. GO SLOW CANINE IS SCARED. 10-13-20 - This canine did very well during triage. He was terrified but showed no aggression at all. 10-15-20 - Canine was sitting at the front of his kennel when I approached. I offered him a treat, which he took gently, and then I was able to leash him without issue. We walked out to the bonding pen and his body language was loose the entire time. However, when ACO Furber, Rogers and Carothers walked by, he did not react at all. ACO Furber even came up to the fence to greet him and Rodrigo was doing full-body wags and enjoyed interacting with him through the fence. He was playful and social towards a female dog (Gypsy) and liked to sit close to her by the fence - Was never reactive towards her. No issues examining mouth and ears (he does have an injury on the left side of his mouth - probably from the catchpole, but he still allowed me to touch his mouth without issue) and handling face, tail, body, paws. 11-09-20 - Took Rodrigo out to get more familiar with how he reacts to touches, he was fine with ear, tail, back, belly. he did great but... he is skittish if he doesn't see you coming, he's a good boy. It was not long after that Rodrigo had really come around and he was adopted from the shelter. Sadly this was not the case. In January 2021, we were called to a hotel after being notified that the gentleman who was staying in the room had not been back to the room in over 10 days. Rodrigo has been left in the hotel room by a friend of the owner's boyfriend. We contacted the owner who adopted Rodrigo back in November 2020 and she let us know she had since lost her job and had to move back in with her parents so she gave the dog away. She verbally surrendered Rodrigo to us on January 20th, 2021. Again, he has since begun to improve behaviorally, and our new behaviorist had put a few notes in about him that I will list below: I went to see Rodrigo today. His demeanor was a lot different than the last few times I've gone to see him. He was more friendly and wanting affection. . 02/09/21 I've worked with Rodrigo a couple of times inside and outside the kennel, and he did very well. He didn't show any signs of aggression, even when he was getting frustrated. We walked around a little.
