About DAMU

Little Damu is cute as a button and sweet as a sugarplum. Though he's been somewhat nervous in a shelter environment, I've seen glimmers of what his previous family told us about him. They describe him as affectionate and outgoing, which he's started to show with brief snuggles and leaning upon me for doggie hugs. He was relaxed and playful with the two children he lived with, as well as dogs and cats, though he can sometimes get a bit overexcited. His high-energy level, enjoyment of brisk walks, and love of tugging games would make Damu a great fit for an active household. He needs a bit of training, especially when he gets excited, but that shouldn't be too difficult - he already knows sit, come, and shake. To boot, he's housetrained and has kept up his good habits while at the shelter. In his foster homes, Damu was reported to guard his food, escalating to snarling, lunging and biting a foster on the face, bruising her lip. He was also observed to be reactive towards cats in the home, and has snap at them. Here at the care center, Damu is nervous but becomes social with a slow approach. We are recommending an adult-only, single-pet foster home prepared to work on Damu's reactivity using positive reinforcement, reward-based training He will need to adjust to his new home and family slowly, in his own time, and he will need guidance on learning self-soothing Friendly, wants to meet everyone he see's, Damu is a heartthrob and a sweetheart all wrapped up in one. His family moved and didn't think he was important enough to take with them. It's their loss except, now Damu is in the shelter wondering who will love him? He is good with children, other dogs and even cats. Please adopt or foster Damu and show him what love really means. His owner of 5 years is surrendering him due to moving and not having enough time to dedicate to him. Previously lived with: 1 adult and 2 children How is this dog around strangers? Damu has been described as friendly and outgoing when around strangers/new people. He has been described as exuberant and somewhat rough when playing with adults. How is this dog around children? Damu has been described as relaxed and playful around the owners children (5 and 7 years old). He gets very excited and can sometimes play a little rough due to his exuberance. How is this dog around other dogs? Damu is relaxed and playful when interacting with other dogs Occasionally getting over-excited. How is this dog around cats? Damu is relaxed and playful when interacting with cats. Resource guarding: Damu has shown no resource guarding when his owner touches his food, treats, or toys. He isn't bothered when held or restrained. He isn't bothered when disturbed while sleeping/resting. He is afraid of getting baths. He is friendly when being brushed. He seems to not be bothered when getting his nails trimmed. He will bark when a stranger approaches his house/yard but is friendly when a stranger approaches him on walks with his family. Other Notes: Damu is fearful when being bathed but is tolerant of brushing and having his nails trimmed. Has this dog ever had any medical issues? No Medical Notes None - he has not been to a vet for 5 years. For a New Family to Know Damu has been described as affectionate, playful, and energetic by his owner. His favorite activities are playing with his owner - tugging on toys, and chewing on bones/chew toys. When home with his owner he will follow him from room to room. He has been kept indoors only. He is crate trained, sleeping in his crate at night - and can spend up to 12 hours in his crate during the day. He is fed Pure Balance dry food (2 cups 2x a day). He is very house trained, well behaved when left alone in the home, and knows many commands such as, 'Sit, come, and shake'. For exercise, Damu is used to 4-6 brisk walks per day - as well as playing in the backyard. On leash he tends to be very excited and therefore pulls hard. He has rarely been let off leash while out of the house (and not in a fenced in yard). Behavior Notes: Upon intake, counselor had owner collar and place a leash on Damu. Damu walked with counseor to admissions office with a loose body and neutral tail. Counselor as able to scan for a microchip and hold for a photo, Damu did become a little anxious but was able to be walked to medical without growling, barking, or showing teeth.
