About Basil

Adoption Fee: $320
Australian Shepherd / Border Collie
Age: Puppy
Sex: Female

Basil is ready to find her forever home! Basil (pronounced to rhyme with 'razzle-dazzle') is a cheerful 40-lb girl about 1-2 years old. She's nearly perfect: just small enough to pick up, but big enough to snuggle. Just old enough not to chew, but young enough to have a lot of years with her future family. Basil needs a home that will be patient and gentle with her while she adjusts, because change terrifies her. She becomes mistrustful when she is chased or grabbed, so whoever adopts her needs to engage at Basil's pace and be creative enough to avoid doing either, while building her trust. Chase her once and she will not forget it, and she is smart enough not to fall for the same trick twice. She started her life as one of a large litter and she still loves other dogs. She'd do best with at least one other dog to show her the ropes, because new experiences are less scary with a dog friend to show the way. She always has a cheerful disposition, especially when she can evaluate from a safe spot, like her crate, or under a chair. She loves children and at one point must have had a cat friend, but she hasn't seen cats in a while. Basil is highly trainable and will learn most new commands in a day or two. She works well for treats or praise. She knows some commands, but will only do them if she feels safe. Her repertoire includes sit, beg/up, be gentle (taking treats), go to bed (crate), get hooked up (on her leash), hush, settle, and wait (before eating or bolting out the door). Even with all her commands, her hound nose leads the way, so Basil wears a special FI GPS collar in case she gets out. She is fully housebroken, vetted and spayed. She is also crate trained (eats and sleeps), and she will pester you if you don't tuck her in properly at 8:30. Basil needs a fenced yard with room to run, because racing is her jam. She would do well at flyball or frisbee, as long as she can't keep running! Because she is a flight risk, but running makes her happy, homes without a fenced yard will not be considered. She is not a candidate for a pen or off-lead/fenceless situation.
