*ADOPTION PENDING* Oakley's Melody! A sweethearted fellow, Oakley is a handsome, deaf, blue-eyed, blue merle Australian Shepherd mix. He is approximately 3 and a half years old and 45 pounds. This bobtailed boy has one white ear and one black ear. And a big heart. Young Oakley was orphaned when his Mom died unexpectedly. He doesn't understand what happened, since Oakley was a beloved dog in an affectionate home and life was good. Now, the rhythm of life is out of sync for Oakley. He's feeling displaced. Though he has taken a little while to warm up to new people in his Foster home, Oakley is a trusting boy who wants to make a connection with a person who will give him the time he needs to do it. He's a composition waiting to be rediscovered. As many deaf Aussies do, Oakley wants to be close to those he loves. He does life with his eyes and nose. And his heart. Foster Mom says, 'Oakley wants to be loving to his Person' and beloved in return. Oakley's heart beats to one refrain: 'HOME.' He is ready and waiting for the Someone who brings harmony to his heart. In his foster home, Oakley is laidback and mellow. He comes to his Foster Mom for pets, and is very 'chill in the house'. An open-door crate in a room near his people is his safe, go-to place. Oakley has many good manners. He is always a gentleman with his Foster feline friends. Oakley is great about being groomed, and even having his feet wiped after coming in from the rain. He does well with his hearing canine Foster brother, though he can sometimes be a bit rambunctious in play. Oakley gleefully romps with the resident canine in the fenced-in yard, as long as his Person is enjoying the outdoors with him. That zeal is exubertantly expressed vocally- in other words, Oakley likes to bark in the backyard. He has good recall and does fine on a leash. Automobiling is no problem, and Oakley even discovered the joy of air travel when he took a plane ride to get to his Foster. Oakley grew up in a home where he went on hikes, exploring with his fellow adopted canine deafies. This funny fella does have a few foibles and idiosyncrasies. Oakley prefers lying down as he eats, thank you very much. When he drinks water, he bobs his head up and down to some inner cadence only he knows. He seems to be house trained, but may also have used doggy pads when his person was gone, since he had some accidents in his Foster Home. However, he has had no accidents since first coming to his Foster Home. Oakley needs someone eager to give him the time, training, and socialization that will help him feel secure and to be his best self. What sort of Home will answer Oakley's heart refrain? He will make a great companion for someone who is home most of the day- perhaps a retiree, remote worker, or homebody who relishes walks and nature. Oakley will be happy in a calm abode experienced with deaf dogs. Like many dogs, when Oakley is outside he considers anyone and anything he sees as his audience, and doesn't hesitate to vocalize his opinion. Therefore, Oakley is looking for someone who is willing to work with him on appropriate times to chime, and/or an area with less passers-by. A fenced-in yard is REQUIRED for our special lads, and for Oakley, a privacy fence would be great. A multiresidential setting would not be a good fit for him. Oakley wants another canine companion- a confident, easygoing one about his size. Oakley is fantastic with felines. He, like many Aussies, may herd, however he should do well with dog-savvy children 12 and up. As with any new addition, slow, monitored introductions to new people, children, other dogs, cats, and new places is a must. Oakley wants you to know: 'I'm ready to be Someone's Heart-Dog.
