TO BE EUTHANIZED 3/29/2021 in NYC *** FOSTER or ADOPTER needed BY NOON that day to SAVE SHERLOCK'S life! 'Education never ends, Watson. It is a series of lessons,' Sherlock Holmes. Cute and shy Sherlock warms up to a gentle approach and delicious treats! But obviously his adopter who just brought Sherlock back to shelter didn't realize not only that he shouldn't overfeed his furry companion and but also needed to provide him with exercise such as interactive games or walking on leash. Now this crate-trained and housetrained youngster need additional training for his doggy manners and some weight management. Other dogs make him nervous now. So now he has retreated to the initial shyness he showed at shelter but he's warming up again to the staff. It will take a gentle but experienced hand with help of a rescue to get him back to the cute and affectionate boy he was this Summer. Sherlock would love to find a home where he can be solo pet and feel safe and loved! Can you help this poor soul? OWNER SURRENDER NOTES - BASIC INFORMATION: 3/20/21: Sherlock came into the shelter as an adoption return. He has been returned due to his reactivity towards dogs, cats and some people and anxiety. Sherlock previously lived with 2 adults, 1 dog and 1 cat. Sherlock is friendly and outgoing with strangers. There were no children in the previous home - in the home before Sherlock was friendly and outgoing with the 13 year old in the home. Sherlock is playful with other breed/sized dogs, but may become overly excited during play. Sherlock has lived with another large breed dog and doesn't always know how to play gently. Sherlock has a strong prey drive and will go after the cat if she is not kept separate from him. Sherlock is friendly if the owner touches his food bowl while eating. Sherlock becomes playful with toys, however is friendly when a bone, toy or treat is taken away. Sherlock did not bite or scratch a person or animal in previous home. He is housetrained. His previous owner describes his energy level as high. Other Notes: Sherlock may get anxious outside of a crate and will bite, chew or destroy household items. The client stated Sherlock feels secured inside a crate and will also sleep inside his crate. Has this dog ever had any medical issues? No For a new family to know: Sherlock is friendly, affectionate, and playful. Sherlock has a high energy level and enjoys playing with rope toys, balls, and chew bones. Sherlock is mostly and indoor dogs but goes out for brisk walks on the leash. Sherlock mostly poops and pees on grass areas and will pull hard on the leash. Sherlock was fed wet and dry food mixed morning and night. Sherlock is house trained and is also crate trained. If left outside his crate unattended he will bite, chew or destroy household items. The client stated Sherlock feels secured inside a crate and will also sleep inside his crate. Sherlock knows when to sit and lay down, but will go the extra mile with a treat! 3/18: Sherlock is an affectionate, smart dog. He has come a very long way - he sits for treats and food without lunging. He understands 'wait' and 'slow' when we are walking or on the stairs. The mouthing/biting have decreased tremendously though it is still present and remains unpredictable at times. Sherlock is very schedule driven and understands the routine of the household - changes can make him nervous and agitated. When he walks alone, he appears to be less reactive; when walking with our other dog he responds aggressively to anything that she whines at (she is anxious as well but has a 'freeze/flee' response, while his reaction to anxiety is always 'fight.' Sherlock does not engage in resource guarding and enjoys playing with our other dog with a pull toy. You can remove food without a problem, but if he picks up something outside (like a stick) he will try to get it back from you. He eats dry Science Diet for Sensitive Skin/Belly and I do put a little bit of boiled, shredded chicken on top. He goes out quite a bit - but does make it through the night without accidents. We take him on walks roughly 5 times a day, on average. H
