About NORMAN

American Staffordshire Terrier
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Once upon a time, 6-year-old NORMAN (ID #A1964587) had been living a normal life in a home with a family, including children, who loved him. In January, he found himself in some trouble, and his family was forced to give him up. Here is what NORMAN's family provided, on his behalf: 'Hi, My name is Norman. I'm 6 years old. I weigh 85 pounds. I'm a very handsome boy. I'm fixed and up to date on my shots! Im also potty trained. I'm a big goof ball and think I'm a little lap dog. I love to sit on people's feet. I would love and need to be the only dog in the house, but did live with my pug sister. I'm not to friendly with older cats, but did grow up with 3 cats from little kittens. I do love kids, but would do best with older ones ( who know how to give me space.) I'm very protective of my family. I enjoy walks, but get excited when I see other dogs around me. I love car rides. My favorite thing to do is cuddle on the couch or bed. I love treats and can sit and stay really good. I don't like when people touch my paws . I'm not fond of baths, but I will sit though it to smell nice, I go to the groomer usually. I don't like water, but love swimming!! I need someone who can give me tons of attention and work with me one on one. I need a very secure fence that's high because can jump pretty high. I need someone who's familiar with my breed and who can be the pack leader. I'm a very good dog but have had some issues with biting, I just need work. Please help me find the right person!!!' **************** At intake, the family provided this bit of information: 'According to the owner, this dog has bitten 3 times. The first 2 times were last year. Owner stated that the neighbor was provoking the dog with water and the dog bit. Unsure where it bit. The most current bite was Today (01/21/21) the owner explained that her husband came into the side yard, the dog escaped and went after the neighbor. The dog bit the neighbor (unsure if it is left forearm-owner is unsure). The neighbor that was bit is the brother that is living on the property.' ******************** The following are notes logged by staff and volunteers who have interacted with NORMAN: 'BEHAVIORAL, GOOD BEHAV (Wed, Mar 17, 2021 4:12 PM) Easy to leash at the kennel door. Moderate puller. Not interested in other dogs barking at him from their kennels. Once in the yard, he urinated and defecated. He was very attached to me the entire session. When I sat on the ground, he crawled into my lap and laid down. He posed for pictures. He let me pet him all over. Medium to low energy. Easy to releash and rekennel. Later on he was brought to the office. He seemed content gettting love and affection from us in the office and played with a treat puzzle BEHAVIORAL (Mon, Mar 8, 2021 1:17 PM) On approach, this dog was standing still just in front of his kennel door. He appeared stiff at first and visibly loosened up at the site of the leash and hearing baby talk. Easy to leash at kennel door. The leash got caught around his front leg initially and he was okay with me physically holding him a little with my arms as I readjusted the leash before walking to the yard. Because he pulls medium to hard, combined with his mass, I would recommend adoption to strong handlers. Once the yard, he immediately urinated and defecated. Showed mild interest in the male dog barking at him through the fence. He approached the fence, held tail neutral, and froze. Once he sniffed for a moment or two and I corrected the other dog for being vocal, he ignored that dog for the rest of his session. He spent his time exploring the yard and relaxing. At the end of his session, he was slightly nervous when releashed. I crouched to his level and pet him a little. He appears conflicted on whether to accept the pets or cower. After a moment of light petting on his back and side along with deep baby talk, he relaxed and walked well on leash. I decided to bring him to the office for a while. When he saw he was about to go through a doorway, he began pulling for the opening, walked right into the gated area around my desk and made himself at home. Relaxed for about 20 minutes while I typed. Early on he nuzzled my elbow to solicit my attention, for which I pet him and beckoned him back to his bed. He laid down and relaxed the rest of the time. He gave a few face kisses when it was time to go. Easy to releash and rekennel. MAILBOX (Thu, Feb 25, 2021 9:37 PM) ENGAGEMENT TRAINING Per Volunteer Nervous in kennel. Was able to loop for outside. Was fine getting out and walking through kennel . Won't take treats unless I put them on the ground. Will come when I call him. Quietly explores yard. Warms up after a while with some petting and running in the yard. Will follow me around the yard. Will sit at my feet and lean on me. Likes affection and belly rubs. No interest in ball. Nice dog. Came by his kennel a little later and was more engaging wanting to get out. MAILBOX (Sun, Feb 14, 2021 7:56 AM) ENGAGEMENT TRA
