About Nala

Great Pyrenees / Anatolian Shepherd
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

Single female Pyrenees mix, 6 years old, seeking confident leader and forever home. I enjoy long walks, laying on the couch, long walks, playing in the snow, long walks, movie-time cuddling, and long walks. Nala's Story Nala is a 6 year old Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shephard mix. When she was a puppy she was adopted by a family that loved her. They took good care of her, treated her like the family member she was, and even let her snooze in bed with them. When she got to be a year old, misfortune struck the family and Nala had to be taken to the shelter. The shelter took good care of this girl, kept her fed, walked and groomed, but life continued to pass her by while she remained in the shelter. Five of this girl's 6 years on this planet were spent in the shelter. The result was a wonderful dog beneath a layer of fear and trust issues. From there she moved into a program with a trainer, living with her and undergoing direct behavior training to help prepare her for family life. From there, we offered to foster her and continue working with her to further her training and working on her self-confidence. I am happy to report that she has progressed very well in the few months that we've had her in our care so far. What we used to call her 'resting worry face' has given way to interest in everything around her, a love for being cuddled and pet, and a desire to interact with most people and dogs. She's energetic, LOVES hiking and walks and running in the woods. She's eager to learn new tricks and plays well with most dogs she's met. She would make an incredible addition to the right home. Nala's Needs Nala responds well to a confident pack leader type and that is who she needs. She's a big girl who's had a difficult road and she's dying to get out there and let her 'puppy' out. Nala's future forever home will be someone who understands dogs and can continue to coax that out of her while also showing her that SHE is NOT in charge. There are two specific behaviors that Nala is still working on and will need to continue with her future family. First, while she has shown herself happy to play and romp with most dogs she's encountered while in our care, she can be selective. Here and there, she'll decide to be fearful of a dog. This can show up in being snippy around food, when cornered, or when meeting a new dog for the first time. We continue to make progress on this, but it is not a 'fix in a couple of months' behavior for a pooch who spent so many years confined in a shelter. The flip side of this coin, though, sees her play bowing with a group of dogs and rolling around - happy as can be. We've watched her entice dogs to play and it's heartwarming to see the 'puppy' come out! Second, trust of strangers and new people. Introductions to new people need to take a little time. But it is SO worth it! Once you're 'in', this girl is loving and cuddly and just as sweet as can be! We continue to try to expose her to new people and new situations, but it has been a challenge during the Pandemic. For the right person/family, Nala is an incredible dog full of love and ready to play, go on adventures, walks, and be your everyday companion. We've enjoyed her desire to be nearby whether we're watching tv or running loud tools in the garage. She follows me to the garage when I'm working on things, is content to be close by when working in the yard, and is ALWAYS ready for cuddling on the couch and watching a movie. She can't wait to meet you! .
