About Sugar

Adoption Fee: 300.00
Bluetick Coonhound
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Meet Sugar Sugar is a gorgeous purebred blue tick coonhound. She's three years old and is one of the sweetest and most incredible dogs we know. Sugar was surrendered to us by her guardian angel, who found her wandering, starved and emaciated in extremely cold weather. Sugar took a long time to catch because she was so afraid. Her guardian angel tried to keep her, but Sugar was absolutely terrified of him. Given the heartbreaking reaction to him, Sugar's angel asked if we could take her and help her heal. Our hearts broke in pieces for her and she's been with us for a several months now to heal - physically and emotionally. Sugar is not aggressive in anyway; her reaction is far different than you might expect. When she sees men, even the kindest of souls, she just falls to pieces, shaking so uncontrollably that she can't stand up. When she first arrived, she was 37 lbs. of skin and bones. She had been on her own for a while eating whatever she could find, including pine straw. As a result, it took a while for her insides to heal and for her to put weight on. Physically she's doing great now, filling out and eating like a champ. Our vets have given her the all clear on her health. But her emotional state is delicate. Sugar feels comfortable around women, but it takes time for her to trust. Once she does though she clings to her people - her safety nets - for dear life. When she is relaxed and feels safe, Sugar is a dream. She's sweet, affectionate, fun and energetic. Sugar is scared of loud noises, like gun shots and thunder. It could be she was being trained as a gun dog for hunting and failed miserably at the task. Sugar also absolutely needs a contained fenced area big enough for her to run and feel safe, but not to escape. She loves running around and is very playful. She's learning to walk on leash and does well. We think Sugar would benefit from her potential family coming to visit her often and getting to know her on her terms and the shelter's terms and invest in her emotional comfort. Our male and female staff and volunteers have been able to gain her trust by approaching her on her own terms. Unfortunately, Sugar does not get along with other dogs and cats so will need to be an only pet. If you're still reading her profile and are still interested with all that we've said, Sugar is hands down a wonderful and incredible doggo. For the person willing to work with her on her confidence and at her own pace, Sugar is going to be the best companion. She suffered terribly, but her spirit is strong and her will to live and love is great. She just needs that special angel to give her all the TLC she can lap up.
