About Blackbeard

Arrr! said Blackbeard, a pirate known for being a 'sea robber' and having a fearsome reputation. Arf! says 4-year-old BLACKBEARD (ID #A1967432), whose reputation at the East Valley Animal Shelter, Van Nuys, CA, where he entered as a 'stray,' is far from fearsome. In fact, he is more of a wuss, fearful of the sounds he hears in the shelter and out on the street. Yet, after days of not leaving the kennel cubby, BLACKBEARD slowly emerged, and after realizing there are staff and volunteers he could trust, he allowed the leash to be put on him and he walked to the big yard, only to huddle in a corner of the fence. Within a couple of days of taking 'baby steps,' BLACKBEARD showed his excitement to get out of the kennel, and jumped up to put his head through the leash loop. When BLACKBEARD entered the yard and saw another dog in the adjacent yard, it appeared that he had been reborn, running the length of the fence, and wagging his tail. He even showed that he knows to sit for a treat. (See video, below.) BLACKBEARD is a 61-pounder, who is a gem that just needs some polishing up on his confidence and trust.
