About Sammie

Chihuahua / Shih Tzu
Age: Senior
Sex: Male

PLEASE read Sammie's entire bio. He's cute as a button but has special needs. Thank you! Meet Sammie! He is a 9 years young, 23-pound Shi-Chi mix located in Bridgeport, CT. He's up-to-date on shots and tests, and he's neutered and housetrained. This darling little man has a unique lineage! A DNA test confirms a concoction of Shih-Tzu, indigenous Mexican chihuahua (larger than typical chi's) and a bit of Pomeranian! Sammie is sharp as a tack and very food motivated so training can be fun, however he does have a stubborn streak. You'll find that he can be an independent guy who prefers doing things the Sammie Way! However, his snuggles are second to none. After an active day he can't wait to curl up on the couch with you and binge your favorite shows (well, actually his favorite shows). Sammie travels well in the car and would love to go on adventures with you. He is happiest trotting through the woods on a hike, or romping around on the beach. He loves to visit with his canine friends, preferring dogs similar to his size, but often would rather sit in a sunny spot relaxing while the others run around. He can be your one and only love or become a brother to a compatible canine. Sammie is not a destructive type of dog and can be left uncrated, which he prefers. While he's able to be on his own for short stretches of time, Sammie needs a home with someone who works from home or is home much of the time. You could say he's a people 'person.' Sammie has two challenges that stem from a rough start in life. He is sensitive to noise, commotion and people who are upset. For this, he needs a person or couple who have a calm lifestyle and who will let Sam be Sam. He also startles easily and doesn't like to be physically moved or handled without knowing about it first. What helps him overall is having his own private space for when he needs some 'me time.' (Don't we all need that?!) Sammie's family adores him, but when they brought home their new daughter, Sammie had a hard time adjusting especially as the baby grew more active. Now a toddler, she is much too curious and playful for his nervous nature and his need to be left undisturbed. Sam is simply best-suited for a slower-paced, more predictable home without kids. Though he worked very hard to be a good boy when the family dynamic changed, Sammie directed his fear and frustration by biting his owners. Fortunately, medical attention was never required. Fearful dogs don't want to bite. It's a last resort. In fact, Sammy gives plenty of warning through body language and vocalizations. Your love and patience for understanding his quirks and tells will be rewarded with a faithful companion who gives his people a special type of affection - the tiniest little kisses on the nose, just your nose!
