About Maile

Adoption Fee: $200
Rat Terrier mix
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

Once upon a time, 2014 to be specific, an adorable little Jack Russell/Rat Terrier youngster named Maile was adopted to a wonderful, loving family in Washington State. Maile (pronounced My-lee) shared her new family with two canine siblings. In the beginning, things were reasonably copacetic, but Maile never really appreciated the other two dogs. As time went on, she resented them more and more. Squabbles turned into fights, and some fights turned serious. Maile's humans, even with the help of a professional behaviorist and medication, were unable to change her behavior. With heavy hearts, they have come to understand that Maile will never be happy unless she can be someone's only dog, so they have asked New Rattitude to help them find that someone. Now 8 years old, Maile is 18 lbs. of energy and enthusiasm. With humans she's friendly and outgoing (although she will bark at first). She's fine with older children and teens who can understand clear rules and basic dog body language. She is house-trained and crate trained and knows basic obedience commands and several tricks. She loves puzzles, snuffle mats and boxes, squeaky toys, and nylon chew toys. She is very food driven, so training is easy and she's 'hungry' to learn new things. Maile enjoys outdoor activities, gets the 'zoomies,' and loves the snow. She can be a lazy bum in front of the fire and a snuggler in the bed at night. She has a high prey drive, so cats and small pets are a no; squirrels and moles beware. Maile has had surgery to correct luxating patellas on both knees. She takes a pain med for some residual pain in her left knee and currently takes an anti-anxiety med to try and manage her aggression towards the dogs in her home. She does experience anxiety with thunder, loud noises, and the smoke alarm, but possibly these could be managed without meds when the other dogs are out of the picture. Per her vet, Maile's new home should be able to provide a semi-regular routine as well as a safe place for her to retreat when she becomes afraid. Ideally she should have regular low-impact exercise to keep her joints lubricated and her muscles loose. Maile also needs a fenced yard for pottying and exercise. She walks well on a leash but encountering other dogs on walks is stressful to her and should be avoided as a daily occurrence. Bottom line is, Maile is a smart, fun, very sweet, good girl. Could you be the one to rescue this damsel in distress and write a much deserved happily-ever-after ending to this story?
