About MAX

Boxer / Pit Bull
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

** TO Be Euthanized 2/17/2021 in NYC ** FOSTER or ADOPTER needed BY NOON that day to SAVE MAX's life! A gracious donor has offered $250 to the rescue who pulls MAX 111100. His parents decided to surrender Max to the shelter as he was in the process of being returned to them. :( MAX is a handsome youngster who has been at the shelter since the end of January and feels totally confused. What were the circumstances, what were the triggers, that caused MAX to feel threatened by his owners? Now he needs a hero, because with those notes, no one is seeing the MAX who must have been a well-loved pet. He also takes treats through the bars of the cage with a low tail wag. Won't you consider giving MAX a second chance? There is ALWAYS a reason behind these types of incidents, and very often it is human error. MAX must be properly assessed by an experienced dog owner and allowed time to decompress and feel safe. GIVE this beautiful boy A CHANCE!! APPLY NOW before it is too late!! ************************************** %8D PLEASE, message Dogs Lives Matter - Saving NYC Dogs or email [email protected] if you can FOSTER or ADOPT %8D ************************************** INTAKE DATE: 28-Jan-2021 MAX, ID# 111100, 3 yrs old, 54 lbs, Male, Manhattan ACC Large Mixed Breed, White / Brown, Owner Surrender Reason: Owner surrender due to bite incident. Shelter Assessment Rating: New Hope Only No children (under 13) Means of surrender (length of time in previous home): Owner surrender, limited history Bite history: Max started biting and pulling one owner's hair, when the second owner intervened Max went to bite him on the left calf resulting in puncture wounds; severity remains unknown at this time. Max's future caretakers should allow Max a full period of decompression. Max should be allowed to acclimate to a new environment at his own pace. A highly experienced, low traffic, adult-only home may best set Max up to succeed. IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: 2/2/21: Max comes to the front of the kennel with body tense. He takes treats through the kennel bars and then his body softens and he gives a low tail wag. He continues to take treats softly. 1/31/21: Max is standing at the front of the kennel when handler approaches, with a tense body and barking. He does not take treats that are tossed to him. The barking becomes more intense as the handler lingers so interaction is ended. 1/30/21: Max is sitting at the front of the kennel when handler approaches. He stands when handler tosses in treats or enrichment items. He sniffs the items but does not engage while handler is present. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: New Hope Only Recommendations: No children (under 13) Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments: No children (under 13): Due to his bite history, we feel Max would be best set up to succeed in an adult only home environment. Place with a New Hope partner: Because of Max's previous bite history combined with his overall aloof behavior in the care center, we feel he may be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue group. Force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Max to new people and unfamiliar environments. Potential challenges: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Bite history (human) Potential challenges comments: Max is reported to have bitten his previous owner resulting in punctures to his left calf; please see handout on Bite History. Max has been observed to become tense and hard bark at handlers who have approached him in kennel at times, please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
