About STONE

Pit Bull mix
Age: Senior
Sex: Male

INTAKE DATE: 6-Feb-2021 He suffers no fools! Twelve year old STONE is in the winter of his life, and all this boy wants is a quiet, loving home where he can rest his bones and not have to worry about meeting new friends or dealing with other dogs. Is that too much to ask when you feel sick, and are sick, probably from a thyroid issue, but that needs further diagnostics to diagnose? Stone likes to spend his time chewing bones, taking brisk walks, and playing in the yard. He wants his two squares a day and no one bothering him while he enjoys his meals. After that he wants a soft bed, a snooze in the sun, and the comfort that comes from that regular routine. Life, according to Stone, should be about simple pleasures. And at the age of 12, we think he deserves all that and more. Stone needs an experienced foster or adopter in a home with no young children, and some vetting to help him feel better. If you can save his life, you need to MESSAGE OUR PAGE or EMAIL US at [email protected] for assistance. He has not been around other dogs, so his behavior around other dogs is unknown to the owner. He is partially housetrained and his previous owner describes his energy level as low. Other Notes: Stone is not bothered by being held, restrained, or disturbed while sleeping/resting. He will bark if someone unfamiliar approaches house or family member Has this dog ever had any medical issues? Yes Medical Notes: Stone appears to be limping in his back legs. Owner has not taken him to the vet for this. For a New Family to Know Stone is an older gentleman who can be fearful around new people. He likes to play with his favorite toys (chewing on bones) and play in the yard. He eats dry food. Stone is mostly house trained and has accidents a few times a month. Stone has never been crate trained, but appears to be well behaved when left alone in the house. He likes brisk walks on leash, and pulls lightly on the leash. INTAKE NOTES - DATE OF INTAKE, 02/06/2020: Upon intake, Stone barked at intake staff. Because owner stated Stone will bark at people he doesn't know, for safety reasons, we handled him minimally. BEHAVIOR NOTES Means of surrender (length of time in previous home): Owner Surrender Other Notes: Stone will require medical follow up due to a limp in his rear legs. Stone will have indoor accidents a few times a month. SHELTER ASSESSMENT SUMMARY: Summary: Stone remains wary of handling and becomes tense upon contact. It is unclear if his discomfort is due related to his medical condition, at this time he is not a candidate for a handling assessment. PLAYGROUP NOTES - DOG TO DOG SUMMARIES: FUN FACTS: INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Date of intake: 6-Feb-2021 Summary: Barking at counselors, minimal handling was done. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial: 6-Feb-2021 Summary: Very nervous, growled when getting muzzled, but otherwise did well with handling ENRICHMENT NOTES 2/7: Stone was easily leashed and brought into the assessment room for an enrichment session with the behavior team. As one handler was holding the lead a second handler attempted to collar Stone, he became tense and uncomfortable with the contact. The handler backed up as the collar did not fit and went to get a larger one. They attached the collar to a drag leash and draped it in front of him as he ate treats, slowly bringing it around to clip it which he allowed. When exploring the room Stone moved slow, sniffing objects but began to seek treats from the handlers. He would take treats with mild pressure but would catch their fingers, doing better with treats dropped on the ground for him. Stone did not show interest in toys and would become tense upon contact, but did allow brief pets under his chin. At the end of the session Stone was returned to his kennel where he entered without an issue. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: New Hope Only Recommendations: No children (under 13) No cats Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments: No Children (under 13): Due to Stone's wariness around novel people and his reported behavior concerns around children, he would be best suited for an adult-only home at this time.
