TO BE KILLED 02/21/2021 Fearful young Boy Rowan came into the ACC as a stray, and now the ACC has put a number on his days. Rowan looks very young, maybe not even the 2 years old they say he is. Rowan has not warmed up or relaxed at the ACC, the ACC says he has remained fearful. Dogs who are extremely fearful might have not known good humans. On the other hand, it is possible that Rowan grew up in a nice sheltered environment and is just completely traumatized by the separation from his family. Whatever his past is, Rowan is a good boy who did great with the female helper dog. It is humans he is afraid of. Please help Rowan find a home or he dies on the 21st. He needs an experienced loving home with no young children under 13. Please advocate for Rowan. ROWAN 111099 BROOKLYN ACC Estimated to be 2 years 1 week old, 53 lbs UNALTERED MALE, LARGE MIXED BREED STRAY FROM NY 11691 MEDICAL BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: ORANGE BEHAVIOR RATING. NH ONLY INTAKE DATE 01/28/2021 PET PROFILE: Rowan has remained fearful and sensitive with novel touch at the care center. He is reluctant to interact with staff unless constantly fed treats. He has also escalated to growling and snapping when he is uncomfortable, for example when he was restrained for his initial medical examination. Rowan requires a very slow approach and gentle coaxing to engage and will require extensive socialization and further training in a home setting. He will display clear warning signs when he is uncomfortable (growling, huffing and snapping) and he should not be forced into new situations he is not yet comfortable with. Rowan will need an adult-only, experienced foster home through a New Hope Partner. ASSESSMENT NOTES BEHAVIOR: SAFER ASSESSMENT: BEHAVIOR: Summary: Handling Assessment Leash Walking Strength and pulling: Mild pulling Reactivity to humans: None - ignores Reactivity to dogs: None - ignores Leash walking comments: Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Fearful, tense, accepts treats, hard mouth Call over: Tense, accepts treats, hard mouth Sociability comments: Rowan is tense when near handlers but he readily accepts treats Handling Soft handling: Fearful - tense, lip licks, head whips Exuberant handling: Fearful - tense, lip licks, head whips Handling comments: Arousal Jog: Follows, fearful, huffs, tense, hard stares, attempts to jump Arousal comments: Rowan huffed at the handler, maintaining a tense posture. He is nervous and uncomfortable as he greets her. Rowan walks away and keeps to himself as he wanders the pen. Once the gate is opened, Rowan ignores the female but is tolerant of her sniffing his rear. FUN FACTS: INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Date of intake: 28-Jan-2021 Summary: Fearful, stiff body posture with a tucked tail. Minimal handling was done due to his stress MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial: 28-Jan-2021 Summary: Whale eye, tucked tail, mostly frozen. Attempted to snap at handler IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: 1/29: When a handler was attempting to leash Rowan, he dodged the lead several times. The handler was successful using a slow approach and treats, but Rowan gave a slow quiet snap at the led once it was placed on him and the handler was securing it. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: New Hope Only Recommendations: No children (under 13) Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Rowan is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Rowan has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: Resource guarding Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition Handling/touch sensitivity Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Potential challenges comments: Resource guarding: Rowan hovers with a tense body when the handler approached his toy. We recommend that Rowan be left alone while playing with his toy, and that guarding behavior modification steps be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Rowan's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the 'drop' cue and trade-up game. Please see the handout on resource guarding. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Rowan takes treats with moderate pressure. This is a behavior that should be extinguished through trainin
