About Max

I am looking to re-home my dog Max, who is currently five years old. He is a very sweet and affectionate dog that loves his family and is very protective of us and our home. Unfortunately, because of his need to be protective, he can be very aggressive at times, to the point where he has on occasion impulsively bitten me, my husband, and my kids if we even touch him during one of these episodes. He is usually gentle with our other dogs in the home, but despite being raised with cats in the home since he was a puppy, he will often randomly try to attack our cats without any warning or provocation. Because of his unpredictability, we have always had to keep him in a kennel when we have guests over. We have a new addition to our family, as our adult daughter who lives with us had a baby a few months ago. While he has not shown any signs of aggression toward the baby, and I do not think that he would ever intentionally hurt her, because of his high energy and unpredictability with his aggression, I do not feel comfortable letting him spend too much time around the baby without close supervision. This has also led to him spending more time in his kennel, which I know is not fair to him, and is no life for a dog like him. Because of his history of occasional biting, I can't bring him to any local shelters as I know he will be euthanized, and I know that wouldn't be fair to him either. An ideal home for him would be one with adults and older kids that are familiar with his breed and familiar with how to handle aggressive dogs, and can provide him with the proper exercise and stimulation that his breed requires. I would definitely not recommend him to a home that has cats. He would make an excellent guard dog in any home.
