About Diesel

American Staffordshire Terrier mix
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

DIESEL NEEDS AN UNDERSTANDING COMPANION Age: DOB unknown, rabies certificate dated March 2020 lists him as 'over 1 year old' Breed: Pit mix Color: Black and white Weight: estimated 75 pounds, rabies certificate states ') 50' Microchipped: Yes Neutered/Spayed: Yes Vaccinations: Current to March 2021 Heartworm Status: Unknown Other Dogs: Typically ignores Cats: Unknown Kids: Unknown, but we feel it's likely that he'd do well with older children because he's not the type of jump on people. He may not do well with younger children because he does not like loud noises or sudden movements. Behaviors/Modes of communication: Diesel is distrustful of all new people. He retreats from them in an open space. If cornered, he will snap and snarl. He doesn't bark very often (typically only at mealtimes when he's waiting for his food). With the person he trusts, he's silly and somewhat affectionate, loves butt scratches, and doesn't mind being touched and scratched all over. He's treat-motivated and trainable. He startles easily at loud noises. He has not displayed playful behaviors or interest in dog toys, fetch, tug-of-war in the 6 months he's been here. History: Diesel was surrendered by a couple whose adult daughter had left Diesel with them after moving away. They reported that Diesel did fine at first, sending videos of Diesel in the yard and pool with their German Shepherds. But, they claim, Diesel eventually began to attack their other dogs. (This was not verified by any form of evidence.) They boarded him somewhere for a couple of weeks. He did not do well with that experience, so they took him back home and decided to surrender him. For the first 2 weeks in our kennel, Diesel showed severe kennel aggression. After 2 weeks, he came out of the kennel and was extremely difficult to get back in. We had to literally, physically manhandle him back into his room. Despite the previous kennel aggression (snarling and lunging), he did not attempt to bite or snarl at us during this manhandling. About 3 months after coming to stay with us, Diesel decided that I was ok. He started letting me approach and pet him. After another couple of weeks, he let me hug and scratch him. I took him to the vet two months ago to get his weight and a general health assessment. He did great in the waiting room. I took him to the exam room and put a muzzle on him. He was okay with that. He retreated to the far corner when the techs came into the room. When they tried to touch him (to take his vitals), he bucked, snarled, and snapped at them. I called off the appointment and took him back to the kennel. This is why we don't know for sure whether he's heartworm negative or positive, and his weight is an estimate. Diesel has had contact with other dogs several times at the kennel. Each time, he ignored the other dog/dogs. He did not retreat from them or attempt to interact with them. He typically ignores other dogs that come to his kennel doors to sniff or bark at him, though he will occasionally bark at some. Diesel really seems like a peaceful personality, and we think he would make a great pet for somebody who is willing to give him the time and one-on-one that he needs to feel at home. Recently, a trainer has spent several sessions working with Diesel. He seems very smart and trainable for commands and leash-walking. For reasons regarding time and distance, the trainer declined to address Diesel's distrustfulness of strangers. We are unsure if Diesel would be able to be transported to a new location by strangers.
