About BOGART

American Staffordshire Terrier
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

It would be bogus to claim BOGART (ID #A1960933) isn't a hunk, even if he only weighs 65 pounds. 5 years old. He is at the East Valley Animal Shelter, Van Nuys, CA, where he was relinquished (for reasons unbeknownst to me) the first time on December 5, 2020. The owner claimed he was an indoor dog and good with children. BOGART was adopted in late December and relinquished, again, on January 11, for the following reason: 'Owner is surrendering the dog due to the neighbors dog jumped the fence (1 week after adopting Bogart) into his property, Bogart attacked the neighbors dog. Did not bite anyone, owner says the dog is protective. Never been around kids' Shelter staff logged the following notes about 5-year-old BOGART: 'BEHAVIORAL, GOOD BEHAV (Sun, Jan 24, 2021 5:55 PM) On aproach he was at the front of his kennel wagging his tail and looking eager to bew walked. Easy to leash. Very fociused on getting out to the yard. Moderate puller. Once in the yard he immediatly defecated. Urination resembled more like marking behavior as he spent his time in the yard sniffing many different areas and lifting his leg. Very affectionate. When I crouched down, he hopped in my lap and leaned into me. He let me take some selfies with him and he gave face kisses. He let me pet him all over. What I stood up he mostly ignored me and spent the rest of the time exploring the yard. Not interested in the tennis and doesn't look up when you call him. Easy to releash and rekennel BEHAVIORAL (Mon, Jan 11, 2021 11:30 AM) 01/11/21 Owner is surrendering the dog due to the neighbors dog jumped the fence (1 week after adopting Bogart) into his property, Bogart attacked the neighbors dog. Did not bite anyone, owner says the dog is protective. Never been around kids BEHAVIORAL, GOOD BEHAV (Tue, Dec 22, 2020 10:27 AM) 12-22-20 For the past couple days, I have walked by this dog and tried to interact with him through the kennel door. On aproach he charges kennel door, barking and snapping at my hand when I reach for the handle. If I open the door a crack, he tries to pry it open with his muzzle. Probably barrier reactivity. After reviewing the OS survey form, I called the owner to get any additonal info and specifics about the dog's behavior and living enviroment. The owner ellaborated more and told me that the dog was basically kept as a 'watch dog'. He told me that the dog always reactive to dogs and people on the other side of his fence which caused problems with his neighbors. I went back to his kennel, sat down and baby talked for a few minutes. When he stopped barking, I pulled out the leash. His ears perked up and tail wagged. To keep him from dashing out, I looped it over him through the opening above the kennel door handle. When he saw the loop, he sat and waited to be leashed. Pulls very hard, needs a strong handler. Once in the yard and off leash he immediatly defecated. However he spent his whole session in the yard urinating in little bits all over the fenceline and trees. At first he was very social and leaning against me (about 3 minutes). Then he spent the rest of the time exploring the yard looking for ways out, periodically checking in with me. He was very curious about all pedestrians on the sidewalk, but did not react or bark beyond getting stiff and raising his tail straight up in the air. Moderately interested in the tennis ball, but would not retreive. Anytime he would aproach me, if I pet his butt, he would lean into it and lick my hand. He sat when he saw the leash loop again. Easy to leash. Pulled hard on the way back to the kennel. He charged at his neighbor's kennel but with minimal feffort I was able to have him walk in his own. I used the clip end of the leash to reove it through the kennel door.
