About Phoenix

Adoption Fee: $0
Great Dane
Age: Senior
Sex: Female

Phoenix is a super sweet senior looking for a special family!! She's doing pretty well for an old lady! She may be geriatric physically but someone forgot to tell her that. She's still got some spunk in there! She spends 90% of her day sleeping on her favorite dog bed (thanks Big Barker) while I work. She'll go out to potty and play with the rest of the herd and sometimes do a zoomie or two as her body allows. She's pretty much the perfect dog - loves everyone, good with most other dogs, ignores cats, completely house trained and doesn't need a crate. What she does need are daily medications to keep her pain free (around $80-$120/month - she's currently on daily gabapentin, Galiprant, and Synovi G4, but that could likely be reduced to around $50-$80/month with a few substitutions) and lots and lots and lots of love. Adopters MUST be vigilant in continuing her medication regimen to keep her happy and healthy. Her people are her favorite part of life and she shows that by demanding head rubs whenever your hands are empty. Phoenix came into rescue after likely spending her entire life as a breeding dog. She even gave birth to a litter at the beginning of 2020 at the age of 10 (and YOU thought 2020 was rough for you). She was taken in by a new family but was not provided with medical treatment or prevention. They subsequently surrendered her to Lucky Farms Animal Rescue. At her initial vet visit, we discovered she is HW+, has a heart murmur, and likely loads of arthritis or dysplasia or both. She has been given treatment for these pesky parasites and adopters will need to continue giving her monthly prevention. Her poor knees and hips don't really slow her down now that she is on anti-inflammatories and pain medication. Phoenix's ideal home would be single level with minimal steps out to the yard. Inside would be carpeted or have plenty of rugs so she doesn't slip and slide. Other dogs in the home are fine as long as they are respectful and will give her space. She does like to occasionally 'claim' her toys, bed, or bowl by letting out a deep bark whenever other dogs get too close. She's earned the right to her things in her old age even though she likely wouldn't follow through with anything more than a warning bark. Phoenix is the sweetest old girl on the planet. She deserves to spend her golden years spoiled to the full extent and loved beyond belief. If you have space in your home and heart for this sweet girl, please fill out the application below. Phoenix is fostered in Roanoke, VA. Her adoption fee is waived with an approved application (including home visit and vet reference) to only the best, most suitable home. We do adopt out of state, but require adopters to travel to the foster's home to meet the dog to ensure its a good fit.
