Meet Little Peep! Or as I like to call him 'Meep Meep.' Our little broken deaf chihuahua. Peep is one of the saddest rescue cases I have worked with in my career. I got him on Easter Sunday when a friend called us with nowhere else to go. They found a chihuahua running in the middle of the Parkway down in the oranges. He had what was originally thought to be a wound on his ear and was in a lot of pain. Because it was Easter, no one would help and take him; I said bring him to me and we rushed him to the hospital. I often explain my first meeting of Peep like that old cartoon where the big wooden crate is delivered and inside is a tiger roaring and snarling like crazy. When they handed me the crate that is what was inside. Literally a 9lb monster! What did I get myself into? When I looked at his ears, I knew this was no wound. This was severe and chronic ear infections that had never been treated. He had quarter sized cysts blocking both ears and puss dripping down his face. Four different vets told me that Peep's ears are the worst they have ever seen. I brought him home and started the long road to recovery with him. For the first week I could not even touch him. I spent a lot of time bribing him with cheese and chicken and his favorite, hot dogs. It was clear people had been cruel to him, abused him, and that he had been through hell. With time he finally started to trust me. I do still have some battle wounds from that time, but in time he finally started to come to me and quickly became my shadow. 2 weeks after I got him, we did surgery on both ears. One was just a removal of the scar tissue, the other was a full TIKA to remove his ear canal and close his ear. The ear infections were so bad that we are just now 4 months later getting them under control. This wasn't the end though of peeps medical issues. Shortly after the surgery Peep started to show neurological symptoms so we went to another doctor and did MRIs. It turns out he has bulging disk disorder of his upper back and neck. This is an issue that will affect him on and off throughout his life and he is on rymadel once a day for it. We have been weaning him off slowly but on bad weather days or if he tweaks it, it is still a necessity. We also found out, he has permanent nerve damage on the right side of his face due to the surgery and the damage from the neglect of his ears he has paralysis on that side. Due to this damage, he cannot close his right eye and refuses to let me put drops in it. In time he will probably need that eye removed but not yet. There will be a medical stipulation that when the time comes, he will have to be brought back to us for the removal. We will cover the cost and he can even stay with me for the recovery if needed. For the past 4 months we have been battling his ear infections which are almost fully gone. He has been changed over to a limited ingredient food because we are pretty sure it's an allergy, and although his ears are better, he has a number of scars. One on his right eye is due to the puss over years collecting and ripping off. The hair in that spot will never grow back. His ears will probably continue to be an issue and he will probably need continual treatment throughout the rest of his life. He is approx 6 to 8 years old. He has come so far in the past 4 months. He still gets snippy if I push his buttons or push his boundaries and takes a good long time to warm up to strangers, but otherwise he has become the sweetest most loving boy. He loves to snuggle, gives kisses, and get belly rubs. He likes to play and sleeps on my pillow or under the blankets with me every night. He is potty trained and has never had an accident in the house. He knows 4 hand signal commands and is learning more and has a vibration collar we are training him on, so he knows when we call him to come. He also loves my dogs and is a part of my pack. I'll be honest letting him go will be hard as I have considered keeping him often, however as the owner of Southern Paws, other dogs need me. My job is to rehab, and love, and care, but to also know when to let go. We need an AMAZING PERSON willing to take him on with all his issues. There are people out there who love little broken dogs and that is what I'm looking for! He CANNOT be in a home with children! He needs an adult only home! He can be with dogs and kitties though as long as they won't be overly in his face. I need a family with REAL EXPERIENCE who understands dogs and social ques and how to navigate them. I will be 100% honest, he will absolutely bite you if you do not read his signals. I have had him for 4 months and know how to navigate him. Learning this was not an easy task, and it will take time for his new owners to gain his trust. You also must be willing to keep me updated on his progress and send me pics occasionally. I have grown super attached to my little land shark. If you are interested in Little Peep email us at [email protected]!
