About Willet

Adoption Fee: $200
Rat Terrier
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Good looks, good manners, and good health...Good Dog! Willet certainly has a lot going for him. This handsome, regal fellow is a 32-lb. 3-year-old, who is alert, active, energetic, and loyal. When Willet is in his familiar home environment with his trusted people, he's relaxed and content, often playful, and quite self-sufficient. If life were always so predictable, Willet's World would be totally Wonderful! But Willet's big challenge is his fear of strangers. When he encounters a newcomer in his home or on his property, Willet will bark with alarm, confronting the 'intruder' closely enough to command attention, but just out of arm's reach. The intensity of his barking can mask the reason behind it: fear and anxiety. It can take Willet several days to determine that a new person is familiar and trustworthy enough to let his guard down. When 'dealing with' a stranger, he resists soothing words and even the tastiest treats. This makes him a great watch dog, but it's challenging for a home that gets visitors. During his past months in foster care, Willet has made significant progress conquering his anxiety. He now generally accepts new people off his home turf (such as on walks, hikes, or visits to neighbors' yards) as long as they don't try to touch him or make sudden unexpected movements. And he can usually resist getting agitated at passersby he sees from the window. It will take continued understanding and patient, consistent training for Willet to be more accepting of newcomers in the home. But for an adopter who doesn't need to rush it, and who can stay calm even when a scared dog is barking like a fool, there will be such a great reward. Willet is gentle, reliably house-trained, and good with other dogs. His food motivation and ability to focus make training fun and productive. He delights in playing with toys and enjoys going for leashed walks and hikes. He also loves running around the yard, especially if there is a squirrel or cat to chase, and just lying outside on the deck in the sunshine, lazily surveying his turf. In fact, these latter pursuits are so important to Willet's well-being that only homes with securely fenced yards will be considered for him. In addition, he will need a low-traffic household with understanding, dog-savvy humans committed to positive training so that he can continue his journey to conquering his fear of strangers and becoming the best companion ever.
