*ADOPTION PENDING* Romeo Loves Life! Romeo is an approximately 5-month-old, 20-pound, deaf, vision impaired, Double Merle bobtailed Australian Shepherd mix boy. Romeo is EVERYTHING someone who loves herding breeds would expect him to be-smart, loving, and full of spirit and energy. His so-called impairments? Deafness? Vision impairment? To Romeo, that is just part of being. Romeo loves life, loves being a dog, and loves his Person. Foster Mom says Romeo has an innate intelligence that helps him to form an immediate connection with his Person, and adapt amazingly in his new environment. This clever, bold, high-energy boy promptly moved in and made himself at home! Whether navigating the house, running unencumbered in the backyard, or playing with his older, bigger foster dog sibling, Romeo does it all with aplomb. Clever Romeo quickly understands what he is asked to do. He doesn't, however, always agree, and will voice his objection. Romeo has some typical 'Velcro' dog behavior and prefers to be near his Person whenever he can. Romeo also tends to be a 'shadow chaser'. Foster Mom is working with him on these behaviors to guide his energy and intelligence, as well as increase his sense of security and independence. Romeo has been learning his house manners. He is all puppy, but knows the difference between his chew toys and 'leave it's. Though Romeo doesn't ask to go out yet, he does great as long as he is let out on a regular schedule. He is still learning to walk on a leash. Romeo doesn't like traveling while crated in the car. He and Foster Mom are working together on this. Romeo does well in his crate when it is time to turn in for the night. However, he's not always a fan of being in his crate for long periods during the day. While a crate cover helps, Romeo will voice his protest until he eventually settles down. Romeo approaches his food as eagerly as he approaches life. A slow feed bowl has helped, though Romeo is still learning that true enjoyment comes from savoring it. What do Romeo's Forever Loves look like? Romeo's Forevers are experienced, confident dog people looking for a classic high energy, smart herder who just happens to be deaf and vision impaired. His Forever Family will continue Romeo's training and socialization in order to build his sense of confidence and security with clear boundaries and a routine schedule. They may have had a deaf dog in the past, or they have researched welcoming a deaf dog into their home. Romeo will do best with someone home most of the day. He would be a ideal companion for a remote worker, retiree, or homebody. Since he is deaf, Romeo MUST have a fenced-in yard. Romeo's Forever home may have children 8 and up who understand and respect dogs. Since Romeo enjoys playing with his single foster canine sibling, he would do well in a home with 1 other dog (or perhaps 2, at most). with one other dog. Romeo gets along with the cats in his foster home. As with any dog- slow, deliberate introductions to children, other dogs, and cats are important. Romeo says, 'I'm looking for that Someone who wants a loving, intelligent, exuberant boy- like me! My deafness and vision impairment give us a special opportunity to bond beyond words.
